The Secret Life of Paintings (a Baroque pastiche)

Tannhäuser from Monte Carlo (the link is to Act III but all the sets are marvelous in their own way; I chose this one because it’s minimalism done so beautifully)

Francesca da Rimini from Paris (link is to Acts I and II)

Parsifal from the Met because it is JAWDROPPING (link to Act II)

Fra Diavolo from Rome, which probably takes the award for most creative use of projections I’ve ever seen in a production (link is to Part I)

Thaïs from Monte-Carlo for the overall aesthetic (link to Act III)

that one Eugene Onegin because come on, the leaves are iconic

the whimsy of these two French comic opera productions: Le postillon de Lonjumeau from the Opéra-Comique and Mam’zelle Nitouche from Lausanne

the surreal beauty of Ariane et Barbe-Bleue from Toulouse (in particular the maze set here)

the Komische Oper’s Semele for marvelous integration of sets, props, and lighting

I just love the aesthetic of the Opéra-Comique’s Le Comte Ory

same for Toulouse’s Le prophète

and same for the Madrid Lucia

the sets for the Pelly Fille and Cendrillon in particular are just so fun. I’m a huge Pelly fan

the Leipzig Cinq-Mars is gorgeous

the Amsterdam Benvenuto Cellini

The Rake’s Progress from Aix AND The Rake’s Progress from Glyndebourne are completely different but both marvelous

the ROH Robert le diable (another Pelly production!)

Robert Carsen’s Mefistofele

the Opéra-Comique’s Orphée et Eurydice (unfortunately no photos but go look it up it’s COOL)
