Innumerable Forms ā Pain Effulgence (Profound Lore)
A death/doom record of the highest order, Pain Effulgence ruthlessly refines Innumerable Formās sound. Thatās a serious accomplishment. The band comprises players (among them Justin DeTore, Chris Ulsh and Jensen Ward) with enormous experience in modes of heavy music, in bands like Power Trip, Wound Man, Mammoth Grinder, Iron Lung, Sumerlands, and Hatred Surge. To call that array of sounds āvariedā undersells the sonic diversity, from death metal to thrash to hardcore to grind to trad metal to powerviolence to whatever we may want to call Dream Unending (this reviewer calls it cloyingly toothless, but heās a minority opinionā¦). Innumerable Forms, by contrast, is hyper-focused on death/doom, strongly informed by Finnish death metal but keyed into the bandās own specific expression of dread.
Kontusion ā Insatiable Lust for Death (Profound Lore)
One word can make a lot of difference. Had Kontusion titled their debut LP Insatiable Lust for Death Metal, we might have a reasonable description of the state of the metal underground; judging by the number of labels that deal almost exclusively in high-intensity, rigorously low-brow death metal (Me Saco un Ojo, Maggot Stomp, Gurgling Gore, Blood Harvest, we could go onā¦), there seems to be an unslakable appetite for blood, pus and other fetid fluids out there. But Insatiable Lust for Death is a more ambiguous phrase, typical of the musical subgenreās celebration of corpses, rot and regurgitation, and the causes of all three. Itās a queasy business amid social conditions that suggest an increasing inurement to all kinds of violence. Kontusionās songs are similarly ambiguous, and that can be both good and bad ā the stakes for culture are ambivalent, then, rather than ambiguous.
