I have a very pretty Strat ('61 neck with a 59' body, refinished and age worn) that I was writing a lot of new riffs on, so that's how that happened.  I sold all of my amps and guitars and bought one amp (a Matchless that I later sold) and this Strat.  Then I built my rig around that (more on the rig to come).

So I would try to set one night a week where I worked on at least 1 or 2 songs from the ground up.  I tracked all of my guitar riffs to Ableton, which went very fast since there were only really 3 or 4 per song.

Then I would go in this order:

- beats

- bass

- synths

- sound effects

It took me many months to get at least a basis of those 4 elements for these 8 songs.  A lot of trying different drum beats, recording some organic sounds (like a good shaker which I couldn't find in Ableton packs), and a lot of second guessing myself.  But it was at this point that I was able to calm my mind and tell myself to be patient.  Personally, I always want to have everything figured out and worked out as soon as possible.  With this kind of music with infinite possibilities, that's just not going to work.  So I was able to come up with a mantra that went something like:

"Do what feels right and as much as I feel right each session."

I don't need to fix everything or make it all perfect on session 1, 2, 10, or 100.  And each session doesn't need to be 3 hours.  Where I'm at now, I have all my project files on Dropdbox and can pop open my laptop anywhere and tweak for 15 minutes.

So that's my basic writing/beat making/composing workflow.  Plenty of more details in there, but I'll get to some later.
