The biggest takeaway from the George Floyd/Breonna Taylor/Black Lives Matter, etc. protests this summer is that the state (police, federal agents, National Guard, etc.) is NOT to be fully relied on in order to keep regular Americans safe. "Gun control" is a poisonous phrase, and the Democrats need to completely disavow it if they want their reputation to improve much long-term. Now I’m no life-long gunner. I got my first gun, a Saiga 12, when I was 24 in 2014 right after the import ban. I’ve since gotten custom wood furniture for it and other option parts. Like that girl talking about her car “Brad” in those insurance adds Tomo is my baby [Tomo being short for “Tomodachi no Shotgun” since many a dear friend contributed to her getting made into her current configuration] and honestly no more dangerous than a car [I’ve bumped plenty of things in cars, never once negligently discharged  my gun]. There are 300 million guns in America owned by upwards of 100 million people 99.9999999999% of which will never be used to commit a crime or do anything other than be used to hunt, target shoot, or save someone’s life just by being there to grab and show an attacker of one sort or another “this is not the victim you were looking for”. Assault Weapons Ban did nothing to decrease crime, states with higher gun control have higher crime and the MASS MAJORITY of shootings happen in “Gun Free Zones” where no one is armed but the criminals. All that bill did was ban guns for being black, scary, tactical looking, or other absolutely pointless things that don’t effect anything. I see a lot of people talking about how Pokemon Go has gotten them out of bed, given them drive to do something, to have a reason to not just rot away in a state of semi-alertness and malaise. That has been what target shooting and gun ownership in general has been like for me. When work is shitty and I don’t know why I put up with it I break the pay I’ll get in the day down into ammo boxes, hell I kept thinking “this is so you can buy that Tokarev” the whole time i was interviewing for jobs to give me the courage to go to said interviews. Firearms are the first thing I’ve ever really studied by pure interest in my life, just curiosity springing from self-motivated interest and not the scholarly dictation of a 4.0 student in college learning what they were told. “Gun Culture” is not a bad thing no more than “Car Culture” is because dumbasses drive their pimped out Subarus into underpass support columns at 90 mph at 5am pretending they’re Vin Diesel. Literally a third of Americans own more guns together than there are people in America and last year there were about 11,000 non-suicide gun deaths in America, 35-80% of which [depending on sources] were gang related. 11,000 out of 315 million. This is my hobby and my passion in life, something that motivates a meek, soft-hearted, cry-baby to maybe not be a complete NEET Hikokomori and try to improve their life, work their shitty position in a pretty nice company, to work towards getting a better/real job, something that has brought me many friends on the internet and something people say I glow when talking about. But people want to take that hobby away because a small amount of bad people do bad things with said items when its been proven time and again that said laws will do nothing to solve the problems they pass the laws to stop. So yeah, it pretty much kills me that someone who is dead set on ruining this island of happiness in a sea of uncertainty and fear that has been my adult life is most likely going to be president and could outright ban me from owning something that i cherish the way people do a Dodge Charger they basically rebuilt from new parts in their garage. And my only hope to be able to keep the hobby that gives me peace and clarity is some stubby fingered vulgarian cheeto-crusted potato with a blonde badger growing out of his head. I guess what I’m trying to say is not every “gun nut” is some “KKK Redneck Neocon transfobe” some are like me, an introverted lesbian in a bloke’s body who was and is so shit at makeup and clothes they gave up trying to look like a girl and just sort has to sigh sadly into the mirror every morning looking at their broad shoulders and unfeminine face. i’m chubby and have lots of freckles too so i’m basically how tumblr tries to make every character look. i don’t delude myself into thinking this will do a whole lot of good, but i hope some people read this and can at least sympathize with my feelings, because right now i feel pretty scared and shitty.
