Prionosuchus
Prionosuchus is a genus from the early Permian period of Brazil and is a very large temnospondyl with estimates of it growing 6-9 meters long!
These estimates are based on skull length, with one skull measuring over a meter in length alone
Art by Thomas Hutton
Dinocember 2025 Week Three
The sun rises over Dimetrodon as it travels across the landscape of the Middle Permian, spotting Diplocaulus, Titanoptera, a speculative proto-archosauromorph, and Prionosuchus along the way.
The piece 'Morning, when time had no end' was very kindly composed for this animation by the immensely talented Villi-refurinn. Check them out on Bandcamp for more fantastic music!
This one took a lot longer than usual, with life getting in the way and all that. Thank you all sincerely for waiting for so long!
in the homestretch now :>

perspectives continues!
"Watchful Eye of the Moon" Prionosuchus Permian, 278 million years ago, Pedra de Fogo Formation Like most modern amphibians, temnospondyls such as Prionosuchus would have gone through a metamorphosis as they grew to adulthood. Some temnospondyl larvae possessed scales, as well as external gills, much like an axolotl. In addition, their larvae hatched with all four limbs. Like most animals that hatch from eggs, it's possible their larvae had a yolk sac, although the size of this sac would be uncertain. Prionosuchus itself was metabolically rather fish-like, and the biggest individuals could grow almost twenty feet long. This is an entry in my Perspectives series!
