Trying Other Printing Techniques!
As well as showing us the technique of printing a block of colour underneath your main carved woodblock, Susannah also introduced us to using newsprint to leave white splotches or blocks in a solid colour block print.
I ripped up a piece of newsprint and placed the scraps on a plain woodblock, which I coated with orange ink. I then printed it onto a sheet and printed my main design on top with black ink. I tried this out in orange and green.
Even though I think it looks cool, I also wanted to make the image easier to make out in all the colour, so Susannah suggested that I transfer my design to another woodblock and cut out extra white lines (Basically to create an underlay for my main design).
I only cut out a few lines to be on the safe side, as I can always cut more out later. I plan to test the underlay out tomorrow!
When we were transferring the design, it took a few rolls through the press to come through, but resulted in a really interesting texture in the print. I really like how grainy it looks, mirroring the movement of sand.
