Princess Rym Ali, accompanied by her husband Prince Ali and children Jalilah and Abdullah, attended the opening ceremony of the 4th Amman International Film Festival at the Al-Hussein Cultural Center in downtown Amman, 15 August 2023.
The 4th Edition of The Amman International Film Festival – Awal Film (AIFF) will take place between 15–22 August. She is supported by other family members: Princess Alia bint Al Hussein, Princess Miriam Ghazi, Princess Tasneem bint Ghazi, Princess Wijdan, Prince Hashem bin Firas and Princess Dana Firas. Other guests include Jordanian and international personalities, Arab and international directors, actors, film experts, film critics, Jury members and the Festival’s partners.
Princess Rym took the stage to announce the official launch of this edition, saying: “We look forward to hearing the new voices that will be telling our stories in the next decades: that is the advantage of having a festival that celebrates first-timers”. She added: “This edition also comes at a time when the world of art and culture is being shaken, all over the planet, by the spread of Artificial Intelligence and the ethical issues it raises.”
The Jury members were officially introduced and the opening film “Gaza Weekend”, a dark comedy directed by Basil Khalil, was screened. The director’s debut was partially shot in Jordan in 2021.
This year, the AIFF presents an exclusive edition with 56 films from 19 countries – Arab and international narratives, documentaries and shorts – either released in 2022 or 2023, and showcased for the first time in Jordan. The week-long festival is hosting more than 120 film professionals from abroad, joining the growing local filmmaking community. Most screenings are followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and the festival also offers workshops and masterclasses on topics related to cinema, which are open to the public.
With intensive preparations around the clock for months, the festival carefully curated the rich program of films, all Jordanian premières. Jury members will select the winners, who will receive the Black Iris Trophy in addition to cash awards on the 22nd of August. This year, an additional prestigious award has been added: the FIPRESCI Prize – International Film Critics – which will be handed over to the best Arab feature-length documentary.
In parallel to the screenings, the Amman Film Industry Days (AFID) entails a series of workshops, seminars and talks as well as three pitching platforms for Jordanian and Arab projects in development or post-production. (x)

30 October 2021: Led by Princess Jalila Bint Ali, Jordan took sixth place among 25 teams in the 200km five-day long “Gallops of Jordan” race from Wadi Rum to Petra.
The event, which took place from October 23-30, involved 25 teams of 133 riders from 15 different countries. The race started in Wadi Rum and ended in the ancient rose-red city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was won by the French team “Blue Ghallah”.
Prince Ali, the princess’ father, posted on his Twitter that “So proud of my daughter Jalila for competing in GALLOPS OF JORDAN. As the youngest ever competitor in this international endurance race. Congrats also to all her colleagues on team Jordan.”
According to race organiser Sameer Ahmad, the race had previously taken place in India, Morocco and Oman, this being the fourth edition of the event in Jordan.
“This edition had many more people than the previous editions; many people were still on the waiting list as well. We had a few important personalities in the race, a model who won Miss France six years ago, and a Belgian rider who lost both her legs from above the knee in a car crash, and she managed to finish the race,” Ahmad told The Jordan Times over the phone.
Ahmad noted that the race was well organised despite facing challenges and minor errors.
“It is challenging to be in the desert with no connection, but thankfully we had Zain Jordan who took care of that part, which made things easier,” he noted.
He added that the race was successful, saying: “We are proud of this achievement and we look forward to having similar events in the future too”.
Batool Abdallat, a member of the Jordanian team who participated in the race, expressed her pride and happiness in participating.
“I am very proud to be part of this national achievement and raising the name of our country. The race was more of an endurance test rather than a speed race and we managed to finish it,”Abdallat said.
She described her experience as “fascinating”, noting that they visited new places in Jordan during their journey.
“It was very satisfying to explore new areas in Jordan and also witness other people get mesmerised by its beauty. Many participants extended their stays to see more of Jordan,” Abdallat told The Jordan Times over the phone.
Abdallat noted that there were continuous stations to rest, feed and water the horses, which all came from Jordan.
“We moved for five hours per day, approximately crossing 40km each day. It was great to share the experience with so many people from all over the world, and we were very happy to reach the Treasury [Petra’s iconic façade] by the end,” she continued.
According to Abdallat, the Jordanian team, called “Jordan’s Centennial Team”, consisted of six members. “Our goal was to showcase our achievements through the 100 years and celebrate our country,” she said.
“Although it was not easy, it was a beautiful experience which I am very proud of, and having Prince Ali Bin Hussein at the end of the race was heart-warming,” Abdallat concluded. (Source: Jordan Times)
