I think in the talks of "rainbow capitalism is good because it shows that public support is so high that gay shit is a safe investment" and "rainbow capitalism is bad because it's empty gestures of support" what's missing is:
Without more substantial measures, foundational rights, and the means to protect ourselves, it's not going to last
Yeah, don't get me wrong, I ate up every opportunity to be decked out in stickers and rained on with confetti and yes I think people who refused to ever take moments where things were joyful is a problem, but I also think many people "missing" rainbow capitalism stopped doing anything else besides going to the party, or worse, actively hindered anything outside of it
My city's pride's main sponsor was an oil and fracking company that was giving our residents cancer and there was a big fight to get them removed and we WON actually, but lots of queers who only wanted to party got in our way because they worried we'd "lose a good thing"
When trans people started getting excluded from planning for pride, trans leaders were framed as trying to take up too much space, trans folks started to make our own non-corporate pride and the main pride actively tried to get in the way of their organizing because they didn't want to split attendance, as if people couldn't flow from one to the other.
Like I cannot state enough that I am one of the people who sees the value in a company thinking I am a safe enough investment to pander to me, and can also see that in the wave of fascist backlash that doesn't mean that the public is on board with the fascist narrative, and that despite companies abandoning us, guess who are still kicking it and getting bigger and bigger every year? Independent pride events.
Because the actual biggest issues with corporate pride are
the desperation to take anyone's money, regardless of where it came from,
the lack of hesitation in dumping people who do not conform enough with the goal of presenting pride as a chaste and corporate-friendly space
and treating the support of corporations as a sign that we are as progressed as possible, and that no further action nor critique is needed, because the only way to move is down--so better not ruin a good thing
