Renters on Bottom Rung of Rental Ladder Risk Falling Into Homelessness if Rents Increase Even Slightly Communities where people spend more than 32 percent of their income on rent can expect a more rapid increase in homelessness. This trend is according to new Zillow-sponsored research on the size and root causes of the nation’s homelessness challenge. The research also estimates that the scale of homelessness nationwide has been under-counted by roughly 115,000 people, or 20 percent. This research demonstrates that the homeless population climbs faster when rent affordability – the share of income people spent on rent – crosses certain thresholds. In many areas beyond those thresholds, even modest rent increases can push thousands more Americans into homelessness. While grabbing lunch in my neighborhood I passed by a thrift shop packed with used/worn out clothes and various knick knacks... I overheard the owner/landlord mention closing up in 6 months....out of curiosity I let her know I may be looking for a space... in the tone she asked "what kind of business???" I knew I was in for some unpleasantries...i underestimated how unpleasant She immediately said "NO!" "That won't work" "business is to make money" "wrong area" "You should go somewhere else" "people don't want this here" I let her know I had been in business for 10 years , she countered with "I have for 20" (Not true) but I also reminded her this was her HOBBY (Her words) and that she was the landlord...I paid my rent,are and bought merchandise through my business for 10 years, she then proceeded to try and tell me what goes into having a business like you need 1 years RENT in the bank to rent, and you need to pay PG&E and other things such as "sellers permit" (no, really!?!?!) I reminded her that I WAS in business before and when she brought up "evicting people is too much trouble" because in her mind I will no doubt....need to be eventually evicted, I wrapped it up by letting her know she didn't know what she was talking about and that she shouldn't be jugding my business with a shop like hers (it wasn't Bloomingdales in there) She has all the right to choose who she rents to but NO right to tell me I'm not good enough ... I didnt even want that spot....what I get for being curious (First is of the old shop SWIPE for the ladies shop)...we weren't the most fancy/High end but it WAS something good and ever improving....im proud of what we had) People think Gentrification/Displacement has everything to do with money but it's also about culture ... and opportunity/ access, You can HAVE money but if you aren't wanted in a "neighborhood in transition" then you won't be here #oakland #my neighborhood #thediminddistrict #pricedout (at Oakland, California)

This is a trailer from a short film based off of the gentrification within Portland. This film serves as an example of citizenship as it portrays the story of actual community members who engage with one another in efforts to improve their living conditions. This community is scattered all across the metro area but share a common goal of fighting gentrification. This film is a squeal to the original film, North East passage, and follows the story of a single mother who was featured in the first film as being pro-gentrification. Nearly two decades later, she is once again filmed but this time with a different perspective on gentrification.
