Priapos — the laughing, disproportionate, perpetually charged guardian of the ancient world — is one of the most continuously present and most consistently misunderstood figures in the Western magical tradition. Modern occultism has either ignored him or reduced him to shock value. Both approaches miss the living current beneath the symbol.

This week's #FolkloreThursday theme was the folklore of voyages, travelling and travellers! And who does more travelling than Hermes?

Not only does he do a good deal of travelling himself, running errands all over Olympos, earth, and underworld, he also protects mortal travellers.

The first roads in ancient Greece were marked with simple stone statues of Hermes called Hermai (herms in English).

As the god of merchants and heralds as well as the roads themselves, Hermes became the patron-god and protector of all travellers.

Together with his father Zeus, Hermes presides over the laws of hospitality called Xenia. Xenia governed the treatment of strangers and travellers. Hosts would provide them with a bath, food, drink, gifts, and safe escort to their next destination.

In the Orésteia by Aischylos, Apollon asks his brother Hermes to protect his suppliant Orestes on his way to Athens:

"Hermes, my brother, born of the same father, watch over him, true to your name, be his guide, shepherding this suppliant of mine."

Apollon is himself a protector of travellers who grants safe passage to seafarers. In the myth of Theseus, the hero prays to him before leaving for Crete. Upon his return, he prepared a pulse stew from the remaining provisions as a thank-offering to Apollon.

Priapos was also regarded as the patron god of sailors, a protector and navigational aide. A terracotta phallus and a wooden Priapos figure were found in a shipwreck near Pisa.

Poseidon can also help or hinder a sea voyage, as he does in the Odyssey.

As promised, the second part of this post, because otherwise it would have been a very long read. 

His portrayal is in various ways: either as a small man with a huge penis, or as a more realistic human, like how this fresco in Pompeii depicts him. 

What is always depicted however is how he lifts his tunic to reveal himself. On some statues the tunic serves to hold the fruits of his harvest, with his erection helping, almost as a third arm. It is not uncommon to see him with a thyrsus (like here!) or with vines. Like Dionysus, he is very often shown as effeminate and nonchalant in his body language. One of his epithet is also “dithyrambos”, and linking him further with Dionysus. 

As I’ve mentionned previously, Priapus is the deity that watches over the vegetable garden, the sheeps, the goats, the beehives. He shares those attributes with other rustic deities (like Dionysus, Pan or Aristaeus). However, Priapus’ worship became incredibly popular, especially in the Roman world. It was common to have a statue of him in the garden (or even just a painted figwood rod to represent him). It served as a scarecrow, thus protecting the harvest from birds. 

Now, aside from the epithet that I mentionned above, we also find: 

Androsathon “man-pricked”

Ithyphallos “erect phallus”

Tykhon “fortune”: In Roman culture, the phallus is an important protection against the evil eye and it was very common to wear a phallic amulet for fortune. I myself carry a fascinum most of the time (it’s with my keys...)

It’s important to understand that Priapus’ penis has very little erotic function in ancient thought. The only example stating otherwise comes from the representation given in Petronius’ The Satyricon, in which Priapus is given the ability to take away sexual power or give it (or heal it). Priapic poems also tend to focus on the sexual prowess or lack thereof for comedy. But it is very hard with this obscure corpus to know if the erotic function was part of cultus or only part of literature. The cultic aspects we know of are highly speculative.  

Let’s end with this: 

As with all gods, the classic offerings are appropriate. However, fresh fruits and vegetables are definitely recommended. 

His sacred animal is the donkey, for myths reasons that I didn’t go through. Donkey stuff as offerings will also work. 

Symbols of his include a basket of fruits and vegetables and the lotus flower (also for myth reasons). 

In a more UPG/modern tone:

Because his statues/rod representations served as scarecrows, I think it’s fair to associate him with scarecrows. 

A dildo would make an awesome representation of him.
