Just saw a MadHel edit to 'Janie' by Ethel Cain and the line 'she was my girl first' just ugh- bec I'm imagining married Madeline talking abt Helen all the time like little 'oh Helen would be so jealous' or 'yk Helen used have this ugly little sweater..' and it would all be mean spirited but there's this undertone that on the surface seems to simply be apart of the cruelty like that mocking reminiscent fake laughter but really its longing. And after being with Madeline for however long Ernest feels uneased by it and one day he says something to her: 'You talk about Helen all the time its...strange. Could you stop it..?' and at first Mad would be offended 'I do not talk about her all the time' but then she'd be all 'and anyway who are you to tell me I can't talk abt Helen? What does it matter to you?' and then Ernest would go all serious but awkward and have to remind Madeline that 'Well because she used to be my fiancé' and Madeline would roll her eyes and go 'Eugh that was so long ago. And she was my best friend before she was ever anything yours so if she's for anyone to decide who can and cannot talk about she's mine'
