Pressure Washing: A Must Before any Paint Job
Yes, we know: we all want to go straight into painting. No one is looking forward to an exhaustive prep before finally being able to brush your walls satisfyingly.
However, some things are worth the wait and are just as satisfying as painting. Pressure washing is one of those things.
Power washing the house has proven to ensure a professional-grade paint job that looks more even and beautiful and lasts longer. Pressure washing creates a clean, even surface to paint in and enhances the cohesion between the paint and the wall since there’s no grime getting in the way.
By this point, everyone should be convinced that pressure washing before painting is crucial for an excellent final result. However, we want to share a few tips and tricks with you for your home to undergo the best pre-paint pressure washing session possible.
Without further ado, let’s get started!
Don’t try to strip the old paint with the pressure washer! Sure, the power washer is strong enough to strip the old paint, but that doesn’t mean that you should. It is better to scrape off the old paint with a spatula, a sander, or even a heat gun. Otherwise, you would have to saturate the wall with a lot of water to remove that paint which is counterproductive to the painting process.
Watch the pressure! The pressure washer’s high pressure can ideally detect brick, concrete, vinyl, cedar, and even cedar-fiber cement. That’s why you should have an eye on the pressure all the time, and most importantly, watch the distance from the nozzle to the ground. Stand well back, from 18 inches to 6 feet away from the area you’re pressure washing, and make sure you choose a fan nozzle over a stream nozzle, and the etching will be easily avoided.
Don’t inject water into your walls! By spraying the wall at a low angle, you risk injecting water into the wall, which could soak the inner material and even damage the insulation system. To avoid this, simply don’t aim the nozzle upwards but rather do it perpendicularly or even slightly downwards. And watch out for any opening, such as air vents or cracks!
Use a bleach solution if necessary: if your siding is experiencing mildew growth, you can prepare a bleach solution with water at a 10/1 ratio and spray it with a garden nozzle. It won’t be necessary to scrub it since the bleach will lose up all those stains. Rinse it gently with a low-pressure nozzle.
Use a cleaning solution: make sure to do this when the area is not receiving direct sunlight. Fill the unit’s tank with the water-cleaner solution, and apply it with a broad, low-pressure sprayer nozzle. Work horizontally, consistently, and slightly downwards throughout the whole area. A stepladder comes in handy here since it can help you advance a step with each pass, ensuring that you’ll cover the entirety of the area.
