Preservance - Chapter 6

Another day passes. Or maybe itâs been two. The fact Iâve been hearing voices apologize to me nonstop sure as hell doesnât help. Makes it hard to sleepâ not that I really need to anymore.Â
My only source of entertainmentâs been snatched since these rooms are all graves, apparently. Or at least that one was. Donât think I wanna try wandering into more of âem.Â
Plus, Iâve no idea how Ruella knew I was there. Do they have eyes in the back of their head or something?Â
Youâd think being stuck in a place full of books, Iâd bite the bullet and read, but none of âem are readable. Everyone one of âem is written in a whole different language. No way am I learning a whole language âcause Iâm bored.Â
âŚSorta sounding tempting now, though.Â
I run my hand along the books instead. There has to be something I can understand somehow, right?Â
The sound of the wood vibrating snaps me out of my thoughts.Â
I look back at the shelf. The silver pin that killed me shines as it buzzes. First time itâs gone off since I threw myself a moping party the other day. Weird.Â
âWhatâs wrong with you?â I murmur under my breath, moving to pick it up. âLonely or something?âÂ
The pin fizzles with energy. It glows as another personâs voice bursts from it. âEhe. Not yet!âÂ
âGah!âÂ
The pin sounds like itâs laughing at me as it falls to the ground with a click. Itâs terrible quality, though. Whoeverâs on the other sounds like theyâre talking to me through a radio.Â
âScared already, Quin? I thought you were braver than that!â The weirdo giggles. âNot everyoneâs daring enough to have a grudge against a god!âÂ
I grip the insides of my hoodie pocket. âHow dâyou know my name?âÂ
âA god knows everyoneâs names, silly! Especially if you keep them hidden. Not that Iâm one of them!âÂ
I roll my eyes. Whyâs everyone so into learning my name these days? Someone out there trying to steal my identity?
âOh, but Iâm not here to tease you!â The voice continues on. âWhat I really want to talk about isââÂ
âYeah, cool. See you.â I turn around, ready to walk off without another word.Â
The weirdo laughs. It comes out weirdly clear this time. âCome on, Quinny. Youâll regret it later, Iâm telling you!âÂ
âYeah, right. Whaddya wanna tell me? Something isnât right here? Seems obvious to me.â I roll my eyes.Â
âOh, you noticed?â The voice sounds weirdly⌠excited. âThatâll make this so much easier!â
âUh, what, my assasination?â
âNo, silly!â Their laughter sounds like tinkling bells. âYou see⌠the exiled gods want to make a deal with you.âÂ
â...Hold on. Exiled?â I frown. âRuella told me they left.âÂ
I can almost hear the smile in this voice as it speaks. âDid they?â
I frown, trying to recall. They⌠probably did. Right? Whyâd I think they leave?Â
âSaid something âbout how they rejected their positions. Or whatever.âÂ
âPffft.â The voice goes low, clearly annoyed despite their singsong. âOf course thatâs how theyâd think about it.âÂ
Thereâs the sound of someone clearing their throat, and their cheer returns. âAre you close with Ruella?âÂ
âI just got here.âÂ
âHmmm. Thatâs a no! Hold on a minute~.âÂ
A pause.Â
âHow about this!â The voice sounds firmer now. Bit of their playfulness is in that voice, but a lot of itâs gone. âYou want information. Well, so do we!âÂ
The voice continues. âTurns out no oneâs been able to go back home there since⌠well, forever, pfft! Whoâs fault do you think that is?âÂ
âEr. Ruella?âÂ
âItâs always Ruellaâs fault,â the voice laughs. The false cheer in it cuts me like a knife.Â
I dunno who Ruella is, reallyâ but whoever this person is clearly has a huge grudge against âem. Not afraid to show it, either.Â
âI⌠donât get what you want from me.â I frown. âObviously somethingâs up here, but. Ruella let me in. Iâm not even a god or anything. And itâs not like there arenât any gods in here, too.âÂ
I glance at the door, where weapons lie on the other end of the hall. ââSides, I⌠canât be sure youâre not lying, either.âÂ
The voice sighs, kinda like they figured Iâd say no.Â
âGot to you already, huh? Darn. Shouldâve found a way to break in there.â The voice huffs. âOh well! I think weâre getting a little off topicâŚâÂ
âYou wanna know whatâs going on, but no one thereâs totally gonna tell you. We wanna know whatâs in there, but we canât even get inside! Huuuuge problem.âÂ
âSo⌠why donât we cooperate?â The voice hums. âWeâll help you learn whatever youâre curious about⌠as long as you answer some of our questions. Honestly, of course!âÂ
I think about it for a moment.
â...No thanks.âÂ
âHuh, really?â They donât even sound surprised.Â
âSounds like a scam.âÂ
No matter how they phrase it, itâs my ass thatâs gonna be on the line, not theirs. Thatâs not some kinda fair trade. Thatâs just some deal with the devil.
The voice laughs. âAwww, what? But itâs a good plan, right? Unless you want something more?â
âYou even have anything to offer me?â I snort. âYouâve gotta be all talk and no bite. Are you gonna start offering me aââ
âHuh, a favor?â The voice interrupts. âSomething about⌠your death?â
â...You just said you werenât a god.â
âIâm not!â
I sigh. The voice giggles.
âWell, I donât want my friend to keep stealing the cards you keep close to your chestâŚ. but making deals are harder than they look!â Their smile is clear in their voice. âBuuuut I guess that doesnât make you feel any better about us, does it?â
âNo.â
The voice laughs again.
âHow about thisâ letâs start over. As friends!â
âFriends who can read my mind?â
âPffft! I canât read your mind, Quinny. No one can! But sometimes peoples thoughts areâŚ. easy to find! Especially if you keep hiding it.â They laugh. âBut we can cut it out if that makes you feel any better!â
âYâknow, just the fact you know someone who can do that for you creeps me out.â
âHee! Sorry, Quinny~.â
I huff. âAnd can you cut the Quinny thing out? Itâs annoying.â
âYouâre just Quin?â The voice hums. âIs that short for something?â
âCan you not make a nickname from my nameâŚ?â âWell, I have to call you something!â
âThe hell is my name for, then?â
The voice laughs. âYou can call me a nickname if you want, Quin!â
âLike what? Shrilly?â
âPfft, my voice isnât that shrilly. I meant something like Orphy, or something!â
âThat makes you sound too much like a seal.â I grumble. âWhereâd that even come from?âÂ
âFirst syllable of my name! Orph from Orpheus. Cute, right?â
âThatâs a weird name.â And weirdly familiar, too. Did this guy steal steal a name from a book or something?Â
âNot any weirder than Quin!âÂ
I grumble. âLook, I donât care about being your pawn or whateverââÂ
Something knocks on my door.Â
âWe never said youâd be a pawn.â The voice hums. âThink about it a little more, okay?âÂ
âWhatever makes you feel better.âÂ
I flick the pin across the room. It sparkles for a few seconds, before it fades away. Silence ends up coming back instead.Â
I stare at it for a few minutes, but theyâre not talking anymore. Guess that means they dropped the call?Â
âŚThat guy better not secretly be some kind of god of prophecy or whatever.Â
I huff and slip the pin back into my pockets. âWhatâs it again this time, Eurydice?âÂ
The door slides open. Eurydice looks like how they usually do this timeâ like outta a goddamn horror movie.Â
Their eyes shift around the room. Takes a few minutes before they face me.Â
Bits of fruit fall on the floor. [Has the boredom settled in?]Â
âHell no,â I lie. âThat all you wanted to say?âÂ
[No.]Â
The words hang in the air for a few minutes.Â
âYou gonna tell me what it isâŚ?âÂ
[In a minute.] Vines stretch out from their body, messing up the shelves. [I wanted to borrow a book.]Â
I take another look âround the place. âSâthat was this place was? Some kinda god library?âÂ
[No.] They start stacking book after book on the floor.Â
I wait for another minute, but they donât say anything else.Â
âWhat are you even looking for, anyway?âÂ
[Something important.]Â
They start moving to another shelf. The pile beside â âemâs getting big enough to tower over me.Â
âYou can look for it later, yeah?â I lean back against the wall as I eye the tower of books. âThereâs gotta be a million books in here. Whatever you wantâs gonna be a pain to find.âÂ
The juice hangs in the air, like theyâre about to argue, before I hear wind pass through their wooden body. Their version of sighing, I guess.
[Ruella is looking for us.]Â
I raise an eyebrow. âThey change their mind about me?âÂ
[The opposite.] They close their eyes shut. [They have another world for us to visit.]Â
