The Valkyrie's Vigil, Watercolour and Gold Paint on Paper (1906).
Pre-Raphaelite painting by Edward Robert Hughes (1851-1914). Hughes was influenced by the romantic myth reinterpretation found in the operas of Richard Wagner. Barefoot Valkyrie rests by a stream, her helmet and sword held gently, her warrior strength replaced by lonely contemplation. The work uses gold paint to make the scene glow, creating a supernatural atmosphere as she fulfills her duty to guide a hero's soul to Valhalla. Loc. Private Collection. Dim. 101.8 cm H x 73.7 cm W.
