There's a fun-looking new graphic novel coming out soon that we wanted to share some promo-pages for. The creator describes the story as an "adventure-comedy-mystery yarn focusing on Leo’s days as a teen apprentice living in Florence with his estranged dad. Along the way, young Leo makes new friends, pulls some colorful pranks against a corrupt society, and uncovers this vast conspiracy that threatens to destroy their entire world!
"[Artist Marco Matrone] and I worked extra-hard to imbue every panel of LEO with heroics, humor, and heart. Our goal was to tell a story that speaks to any reader of any age...and we hope these preview pages are proof of just that."
Personally, I think writer Richard Ashley Hamilton has hit exactly what he was going for with this preview, but don't take my word for it: click the "read more" and take a look for yourself!
I love the designs on display here, combining genuine Renaissance fashion and styling with a vivid modern fluidity and energy. It looks like this will be a fun, kids-friendly adventure story that will hopefully introduce the great Leonardo to young readers who won't have encountered his masterworks yet, without feeling like a dry historical essay.
The creator goes on to declare "I firmly believe that, were da Vinci alive today, he’d be a massive comics fan."
I can't say it's a concept I've ever stopped to think about...but now that I have, I can't say it's one I can argue with, either! Da Vinci had a mind that was eternally captivated by curiosity, and a love of wonder. I expect if he was here today, he'd be doodling eternally-unfinished comics in the margins of all his notebooks (open question whether or not you'd need a mirror to read them)!
