HASO: Differences of Atmosphere
Prak was used to being the most dangerous being on a ship—he was a prime example of the adaptable, viscous, generalist that most assumed humans to be. But the universe was wide and the aliens contained within limitless. Of course their “space orc” streak couldn’t last forever. But shit, did failing to defend their ship mean they wouldn’t be getting paid?
—
Bohj was tired of the small, stealthy ships that the Nyx Coalition was trying to sneak through her trade embargo. She was running out of room to humanely imprison the crewmembers, as well; the breadth of species the Nyx employed only made it more difficult to ensure she wasn’t accidentally suffocating or poisoning anyone.
The scraping of a grate came from behind her, then the thump of a falling body. She whipped around to see-
—
Prak was triumphant. He would definitely get paid for returning the captured employees, and get a bonus for bringing in the head of the bynizaa. He raised his energy gun towards Bohj, who backed up slowly.
“You’ll order your crew to stand down and open the prisoner cells. Then maybe you’ll keep your worthless life,” they bit out in UIPL.
Bohj inclined her head, but made no move toward the control panels.
“Hurry up…” Prak blinked. His vision blurred slightly. Shaking his head, he focused back on the alien in front of him. “I’m not a very patient person.”
—
Idiot. Bohj thought. How humans earned their clever reputation, I’ll never know.
Prak stumbled to the left, gun hand faltering, and Bohj took the opportunity to sweep forward and grab them.
If they’d done their research, they’d have realized bynizaa breathe much lower oxygen and higher carbon monoxide. That’s not a combination the ever-adaptable human can overcome.

Regions of Mundus: Prak
Introduction: Prak is the capital city of the country of Zogyre, a Spawn-controlled territory. With a population of 18,000, Prak has a modest population among Spawn cities. Prak is located about 386 miles east of mainland Zogyre, making Prak the largest Spawn city on the furthest reaches of the known Cerwiss Superocean. As such, it’s considered the last major Spawn outpost for any explorers and adventurers of the Superocean.
History: Prak’s history begins around 489 GE (Gol Era), as a settlement of the ancient Spawn country of Spewaul. At that time, Spewaul was a major Spawn power with deep ties to the Scypho Gols. In exchange for military support and Gol technology, the Spawn of Spewaul captured human and Avesians from shore and ships to give the Scypho Gols to serve as test subjects. More importantly, Spewaul gave the Sycpho room to perform experiments on developing Typhons and guided them to acceptable targets for practice... namely, other competing Spawn countries. At that time, Prak was simply a makeshift settlement where Spawn and Scypho could come together and perform Typhon experiments in privacy.
Perhaps it was karma, or simply a lack of foresight, that doomed Spewaul, because in 156 GE, at the precipice of the 3rd Mineral War, half a dozen Typhons were freed from their shackles and devastated much of Spewaul. The Spewaul nobility, the Family of Greeb, were killed in the crossfires, and thousands of Spawn fled the country.
The remnants of Spewaul’s military and a small portion of the citizenry shifted eastward from the shattered remains of their country, taking up shelter in Prak. Over generations, the survivors managed to build up the city and grow the population, and while much of Spewaul’s former territory was lost to the Spawn countries of Tyrias and Lotterial, from Prak the survivors shifted the borders of their country to where Zogyre rests today.
Geography: Located about 386 miles east of Zoygyre, Prak rests on the edge and embedded into the sides of the Scripa Trench. Artificial islands float at the surface directly above the city, and while several thousand feet of ocean water separate the two, the islands are equally inhabited by the people of Prak.
Given how far out to sea Prak is, its islands are regularly buffeted by hurricanes in the Cerwiss Superocean and flooding is regular. The ocean temperatures of the Scripa Trench reach about 5-6 degrees Celsius, and although rare nowadays, nomadic ocean Typhons are known to drift through the city occasionally. Given the more docile and nomadic nature of ocean Typhons compared to land Typhons, these incidents are less catastrophic than the destruction of Spewaul, but issues to arise nonetheless.
Demographics: Given its far distance from the mainland and small-sized islands, the vast majority of Prak’s population is Spawn at 59%. Phracto is 23% (largely Crustacean Phractos), 9% is Degenerate, and 8 percent is Avesian. The human population is a negligible 1%.
Out of all the sapient species in the Soul of Steam series, I feel I neglect the Spawn the most. Arguably, because I have the smallest number of Spawn characters and the more fluid nature of their settings is alien to a landlubber such as myself. Still, I hope to represent them more fairly as time goes on, and eventually write a full novel about them. The Spawn played heavily into the history of Yaquoris too, even if they weren’t giants like the Gols were.
