This was a stunning debut by Euzhan Palcy, one of the best to ever do it on film. To think that she was only 25 when this came out, incredible. Was lucky enough to see this at the cinema a couple of years ago. Two things stood out for me when I saw this: the palpable feeling of respect for and love for the characters and the setting that radiates from every frame and Ma'Tine’s unshakeable resolve to see her grandson educated.
