nobody prepared me for life AFTER hernia surgery and honestly someone should have
like yes the surgery went fine thank you for asking
but those first few days at home? chaotic. confusing. weirdly emotional.
so here is everything I wish someone had told me beforehand 👇
day 1–3 aka the "why did I move like that" era 😭
🔸 everything is swollen and sore and that is completely normal 🔸 the anaesthesia fog is real and it is weird 🔸 getting up to walk feels impossible but please do it anyway 🔸 you will sneeze once and question every decision you've ever made
the things nobody actually warns you about:
😶 constipation after surgery is a very real thing eat your fibre. drink your water. I cannot stress this enough.
😶 you will feel fine and then suddenly very not fine rest is not optional it is mandatory
😶 loose clothes are your best friend for at least a week your waistband is your enemy right now
the actual recovery timeline ⏰
week 1 → rest, heal, be gentle with yourself week 2–3 → light activities, short walks, feel human again week 4–6 → back to almost normal life 🙌
🚨 go back to your doctor immediately if you notice:
❌ increasing pain that won't settle ❌ fever ❌ redness or discharge at the incision ❌ anything that just feels off
trust your gut. literally.
once you get through those first two weeks the relief is unreal.
no more that weird bulge. no more that dull ache. no more googling "is this normal" at midnight.
just you, fully healed, eating normally, living your life. 💛
hernia surgery recovery is manageable, walk early, eat fibre, don't lift heavy things, and be patient with yourself. you've got this. 🩹✨
