Hate being unwell when I have stuff that needs to get done 🙈. Can’t concentrate as my head feels like a dizzy ball of cotton wool and have last weeks reading from my Disability Studies module as well as this weeks (as I missed class because of the start of this) and then need to make notes from my Curriculum module for the essay that is due in March so that I can keep up with the amount of information given each week. As last lesson I wrote ten pages in the class 🙈 so Lord knows how many notes I’ll have at the end of 8 classes when the assignment is due 😅.
Then the dance show is in three weeks and so far I’ve missed two rehearsals this week because of being ill. I promised to help with costumes but can’t go the persons house to sew as I don’t want to get her sick as well 🙃. This is a nightmare 😅.

So my University got an award for Gender Equality and I could not BELIEVE that was real. Except it is.
TL;DR : The standards for getting this sort of award are so. fucking. low. that Universities get to brag about “Gender Equality” even when the numbers THEY PROVIDE show that they have very much NOT REACHED ANY SORT OF GENDER EQUALITY AT ALL.
Get mad with me under the cut if you want to see how I lost an hour of my life going through the documentation they submitted to get the award.
So I had a look at the exact documentation they submitted to get this award, since it is publicly available. And apparently :
having only 28% of chair positions attributed to women
having 2/3 of Head of Schools being men
having men more often holding permanent position than women, and women more often holding temporary positions than men
having a higher turnover rate for women than for men
paying 69% of the highest salaries to men
having 67% of research fellows be men
in 10 YEARS having the rate of women associate professors go from 48% to 49% (IN !! 10!!! YEARS !!!!!)
and putting all that, explicitely, in your application for a Gender Ewuality award can, indeed, get you that Fancy Gender Equality Award. Abd you get to brag about it !! Put it on your website !!! Mention it on every grant application !!!!
So I am not denying that it did some progress, because that would be hypocritical (and I will take any progress, ANY). But an AWARD ? I am sorry, but if THIS is the academic pipeline of a University :
then it doesn’t get a “Gender Equality” award, like it’s some amazing place for women where they can actually expect gender equality.
It gets a “Good effort, still not there” award, at best, and a feedback that goes “Hey, quick question, how the fuck do you start with 60% of women in Undergrad, but end up with 73% of men as Chair Professors?”
