What if the Admirals wanted Shane, they were offering a good contract/an A. It was a good offer but Shanes's agent either didn't tell him or she told Yuna who didn't tell him. For whatever reasons. Shane still signs with Ottawa just like in tlg. Shane eventually finds out the truth when Scott Hunter tells him how much he was wanted on the Admirals.
anon, you are an evil genius and i love you for this. i'm writing a whole separate fic with this as the premise, here is a quick blurb that I randomly came up with on the spot!
Shane has a love-hate relationship with the yearly MLH Media Tour. He understands the importance of it, he really does and he likes getting to catch up with some of his friends from other teams, specifically Scott and Carter. He knows Ilya's opinion on Scott but Shane can't forget what Scott did for them, for the league, and for accepting Shane as a rookie. But Shane will snap if one more person asks him about his and Ilya's relationship instead of hockey. This is supposed to be a way for players to talk about next season, not for Shane to answer conspiracy theory's about his relationship.
"Hey, Rook."
Shane jumps about 5 feet in the air, he didn't even notice Scott walked up next to him, god, He needs to stop spacing out.
"Hi, Scott."
"Sooo, how are you doing, haven't seen you since April."
"If one more person asks me about Ilya I'm walking out. Isn't this supposed to be about hockey? Like the job I've been doing for the past decade."
"You'll get used to it, I swear every interviewer kept asking me who Kip was for a whole year, then again I didn't create a massive scandal within the league."
"It wasn't our fault and you know it, I just want someone to ask me about hockey, about signing with Ottawa, literally anything but, 'When did you and Ilya Rozanov get together, is it true you got married in July.'"
"Ok, I'll shoot, how's Ottawa? I know you just signed there but what were the perks?"
"There were no perks."
"What?!"
"Yeah, technically this is under the radar but I took a 6 million dollar pay cut, no letter, nothing. Apparently it was so obvious I was going to join Ottawa they didn't even try."
"Shane. Why the hell did you take that offer?"
"It was the only good one, unless I wanted to sign with Buffalo."
"Wow, I'm offended."
"It's not like any top teams offered. To be honest I'm a bit offended, I thought there would be teams begging on their knees for me, but I guess I'm not as good as I thought."
"Rook, you are the best player in the league, and don't you dare say 2nd best. You have three fucking cups, a Conn Smythe award and brought the best MLH team out of a 16 year drought. What do you mean no top teams offered? I know for a fact Boston wanted you, New York sent you an offer, I bet even Detroit wanted you as well as the other 29 teams."
"You know for a fact I wouldn't join Boston."
"Wait, what do you mean the Admirals sent me an offer?"
"Yeah, we thought it was a good offer considering. The pay was decent sitting at 11 million a year, Carter was willing to give up his A for you, and I'm probably gonna retire in a few years which would leave the captain spot open for you."
"I was really looking forward to playing with you, all of the Admirals were. But we understood why you chose Ottawa, I mean Ilya moved for you didn't he, It would be kinda pointless if you moved closer to Boston."
"I never got that offer. No one showed me any besides Ottawa, Buffalo, and teams worse than Montreal. Are you saying every team sent me an offer?"
"I'm pretty sure, you're Shane Fucking Hollanderâ„¢ they would be stupid not to."
"Fuck! I'm going to need to have a long chat with my mom, and my agent."
"Is your the offer still open?"
"It's been open since before you left Montreal."
"Shane, are you okay?"
"Hah, no, I'm so pissed right now. Can I have your coach's number?"
"Yeah, of course."
"I'll be in contact with you and your coach no later than tomorrow, see you later Scott."
"See you Rook."
