I am not at all against their defence of whatever female character is currently being hounded by slavering fandom dogs at the time

It´s not that I think they´re wrong, I think they´re completely right and what I´ve so far witnessed in all my fandoms bears their accusation (the first part of it in any case) out

what I am really tired of is the short-sighted, unreflected comparison of apparently arbitrary characters they often chose to compare their defendee with. (apparently arbitrary because it seems they are simply the male characters they have been most exposed to in the usual excuse fashion of “they had a bad past” - this is for many reasons very unfortunate)

let me tell you why.

These characters you use for comparison? are often comletely different, not only from who you are currently defending but also from the other examples. this is stupid. its comparing grass with mushrooms with shrubs with whatever. don´t do that. you are devaluating your own position.

pay actual attention if the male character you have been drowned with excuses on is not actually very much like the character you are defending. or a, anctual  “victim” of the same (real world) factors that conspire against the character you are currently defending.

female characters are judged more harshly, are given far less leeway and are very often broken by mountains of absurd expectations. this is a fact. females in general, in the real world, face the same problems by the way. if you are defending your female character you are probably in some way aware of this.

are you also aware of the social coding used so often that it is pretty much a real world trope by now? everyone knows about black or dark colours meaning characters are bad, but are you aware of how often male characters are given female coded behaviours, issues, problems in a way to express their deviance, their badnes, their just-not-alright-no-way? Are you really?

In that case maybe think, if you really have to name names in your defence, if the characters you are naming aren´t in fact given so much empathy and “excuse” because people (yes often women) find and see themselves in those characters exactly because of those female coded behaviors and traits, because they have been there, in that place where you just can´t win, where if you do the same thing as other people you are the bad one but if you act different its wrong as well.
