So in my music class we are making a podcast episode and I Decided to make mine about newsies, so you all get to see my script! It's not the best but I'm working on a time crunch here okay?
For some brief history, the Newsies movie was released on April 10th, 1992 and was eventually remade into a musical later on having its first performance on September 25th, 2011. Newsies follows strike leader Jack Kelly when he is forced to take on Joseph Pulitzer after the prices for newspapers rose, loosely following the events of the real-life Newsboys’ strike of 1899.
Going into color, one of my favorite examples is the use of the color red. Newsies uses red as a symbol of power, for example: Jack’s bandana, Spot’s suspenders, the table cloth in king of new york, and Pulitzer’s suit. Jack and Spot are the only two newsies to wear red in their outfits, contrasting the usual neutral or dulled colors, due to the fact that they are both leaders of their newsies. (Spot having Brooklyn and Jack having Manhattan) Jack’s bandanna is usually very out there during most of the strike, until he meets up with Pulitzer after the rally. Pulitzer and most of the villains in Newsies wear very dark/cool colors, however the one time Pulitzer is seen in a warm color (specifically red) is when he is talking to Jack about scabbing. It’s showing us that he is the one with power in the situation. After, when Jack is scabbing you know what's missing? His bandana! And is seen in cold dark colors like most of the villains. The last example of this is during king of new york (the best song), the newsies throw a bright RED table cloth over Denton’s shoulders as they call him the king of new york
Red is one of the main reasons why I hate Jack's costume I'm newsies live, they removed the red altogether and gave him a bright blue shirt like David had in the movie. David's shirt was eventually taken away by the end of the movie to show how much he changed and make him blend in more with the newsies, and in the movie Jack is mainly in pale grays, making him stand out from the other newsies but still blending in enough to be obvious that their one of the same, so Jack having the blue doesn't make any sense because it makes him stand out more from the newsies.
Now moving on to Kathrine, her outfit changes are some of my favorites. When Kathrine first meets the newsies and then meets with Jack again at Medda's she is seen in a mainly blue outfit, but as we move forward her outfits change to more reds, Oranges, and pinks, and by the end of the musical her color palette is the same as the colors that have been associated with Santa Fe throughout the musical. (the background in Santa Fe prologue and Jack's backdrop of Santa Fe for medda.) So basically she became his Santa Fe, being one of the main reasons Jack stays in the end.
Finally I want to talk about David.
David's character development is one of the main reasons I love his character, in the movie he immediately finds a way for the newsies to make the strike happens after it's brought up and is only talking to Jack about being responsible about it. Oh the musical I feel like a lot of his character is gone? He is very against the strike and only agrees once he realizes it's the only option for him.
However, I do think that they get is costumes right. When we're intraduced to David in the movie he is seen with a blue shirt, a tie, and an unbuttoned brown waistcoat. Throughout the movie he loses the tie and the waistcoat, eventually having only a off-white undershirt on like most of the newsies. It really shows how David has changed and is one of the newsies now.
When we meet him in the musical he is in Brown and white, being a lot more proper than he was in the movie. This is why I don't like Jack having blue, with David having brown he blends in with the newsies more than Jack. The blue was supposed to be there to show how he's different from them and that's why at the end of the movie it's gone.
By the end he still has his waistcoat, but his shirt is now decorated with blue stripes having patterns like most of the newsies.
However in newsies UK? Gone.
I hate David's costumes in newsie uk, it's so bad. He is grey for some reason like most of the background newsies so he doesn't stick out at all, yet Jack, crutchie, and Kathrine all stand out in their own way. Jack and crutchie stand out from them but still having it obvious that they are part of the newsies.
David barley has any color at all, like I said he might as well be a background newsies with how he's dressed.
In both newsies live and in the musical his growth as a character is shown through his costume. (Movie: becoming more dressed like the newsies with his undershirt. Livesies: adopting Jack's signature blue, and becoming less proper.) But it's just not there??
He barely changes whatsoever, he doesn't get Jack's red, or any color. It makes not sense, they could've had him roll up his sleeves and unbuttoned his collar yet the chosen for him to stay the same.
It makes me really mad how they did his costume, and I just wish it was better.
