it’s crazy to me when i see that folks think the pool scene is romantic when it is literally heartbreaking TO ME!!! but if you’ve been in a similiar position before you’d see how fucking sad it is. imagine finally being real with the girl you love in the hopes you MIGHT receive it back because hey, we’re being honest right now right? she’s doing it too? only for her not to notice and to instead confess to an infatuation you could NEVER compete with. i feel this part shows Gideon’s resignation.
so you settle for holding the hand of the girl you love, knowing you want more and will never ever have it. that’s how it felt to me.
BUT THEN someone else comes along, following the girl YOU love around like an idiot and making heart eyes even though they pretends they don’t care, you actually feel a tiny bit of pity for this idiot because even though you hate them, you been there, hell, you died there. standing in the pool, pouring your heart out. you see that in their stupid smug idiot face and maybe you might take solace there instead. because maybe you both can help each other forget about the war crime who can never love you
Do yall think that when Gideon grabbed Harrow and pulled her under the water in the pool scene, Harrow thought Gideon was finally going to kill her?
Like Harrow has spent her whole life trying to make Gideon utterly miserable. She has beat her, humiliated her, degraded her their whole lives. And now, she’s dragged Gideon to a place where she is, again, using Gideon for her own power. She has isolated Gideon with her vow of silence. Nearly everyone Gideon has begun to care about in this place has died terribly and the one that hasn’t, Harrow has bared Gideon from seeing. And now, Harrow has admitted that she is the result of hundreds of children’s deaths. She is the result of a genocide that was also meant to include Gideon. Harrow was (indirectly) a part of the genocide that completely isolated Gideon for her whole life. And, even if Gideon doesn’t care about it, Harrow also admits that she opened the tomb. The only thing that gave anyone in the Ninth house purpose was to guard the tomb and she just opened it. She directly states “I am meant to die by your hand.”
So when Gideon pulls Harrow into her arms and they both sink into the pool, I have no doubt that Harrow thought Gideon was finally doing what Harrow believed she should have done years ago. And I don’t think it’s that hard to believe that Harrow wouldn’t have fought back. Harrow has wanted to die before, and what better way to die than by the hand of your friend?
If I’m thinking too far into this, let me know but this has been in my mind for a while now.
Update: I have been reminded that this is directly confirmed in Harrow the Ninth. I must now ask for forgiveness from Captain Obvious for stealing his job.
