Polytrix hockey AU headcanons:
- Team captain: wears the C. The kind of captain who leads by example, with confidence and grace. Wants all her teammates to feel welcome and comfortable. Gives good advice, doesnât yell when things are hard, just encourages them to keep going.
- Position: centre forward - versatile, adaptable, likes to feel in control of the ice.
- Extremely high hockey IQ. Always seems to sense where the puck is going before it gets there. Thatâs her biggest strength, more than shot aim or physicality.
- Sheâs also EXTREMELY fast. Flashes by other players in a blur. There are definitely rumours about her being some kind of super-speed cryptid⊠they start off as jokes, but people are increasingly less sure. Like, no one should be able to skate THAT fast, right? But even at her fastest, it doesnât hinder her ability to see everything going on around her and react accordingly.
- Struggled at first with puck hogging, feeling like she held all the scoring responsibility on her shoulders. Her play improved when she learned to rely on her teammates, trust them, and has since become well known for her genius passing.
- Obsessively reads up on rival teams and players before every game. Overworks herself hard, not so much on the ice itself, but by spending hours watching footage of opposing teams, figuring out strategy, memorising every opposing playerâs likely moves and exploitable weaknesses. They joke sheâs taking over the coachâs job.
- Position: goalie. Long limbs definitely help, but she was drawn to it because sheâs a natural protector. She embraces being the last line of defence, likes the feeling of protecting her team.
- There was a period as a teenager when it seemed like her skill was getting worse, and this caused her so much worry and frustration until they realised it was just her eyesight. Once she started wearing contact lenses during games, she began to excel again.
- Extremely confident most of the time, but if they do lose a game, she struggles not to blame herself, and when that happens she can become withdrawn, frustrated and snappy. Rumiâs leadership is part of what helped her learn to share the responsibility and not let it weigh on her so much. But she still spends extra hours practicing to improve after a hard loss.
- Has also struggled with being hot-headed and aggressive. Another reason she ended up choosing goalie is when she played other positions she fought too much, and she actually hated fighting - sheâd just lose her temper and it would happen. After she genuinely hurt somebody, she decided to commit to goaltending and swore sheâd never fight again. She has, however, broken sticks, the glass, and even the net in frustration at times. Becomes a better goalie when she learns to control that anger.
- Other teamâs forwards know her for being extra intimidating, especially during shoot-outs. She levels them with such a fierce gaze that it psychs them out and they often fumble at the last second. Sheâs also a fierce chirper, especially for a goalie. When she played as a kid (and maybe even later), she definitely made other players cry with her words.
- Extremely good at reading people, on the ice as much as off. Shooters never successfully fake shots or plays. She can always spot their real intentions and is always ready for it.
- Once scored a goalie-goal. Teammates mobbed her in celebration. Rumi and Zoey were more excited about it than she was, and celebrated extra hard with her that night (take from that what you will).
- Position: forward, usually left-wing shooter, but versatile enough that she could switch wings if needed.
- Often underestimated due to her small size, but she learned to use it to her advantage: quick dodging, ability to weave the puck around other players effortlessly.
- EXTREMELY physical player. This surprises people even more. Despite her size, sheâs quick to lean into the âenforcerâ role and enjoys getting into scrums. Sheâs good at it, too. Even players a foot taller than her donât always come out on top, but if she does lose the fight sheâs not fazed. Will just spit her tooth onto the ice and move on.
- Leads the league in penalty minutes.
- Even worse chirper than Mira. Her canon rap skills translate here. Her chirps are extremely creative - she has a way with words. Often they work less because the players got their feelings hurt and more because theyâre too busy trying to puzzle over what exactly she meant to notice her stealing the puck from under them.
- Still a massive people pleaser off the ice, though, and after games she always finds the players she chirped or fought to apologise. They want to hate her, but sheâs always too genuine and likeable. Makes friends all over the league, but soon as sheâs back on the ice, she turns scary and feral again.
- Her biggest strength, of course, is her aim. She can score from the craziest angles. Behind the net, all the way from the blue line, through heavy traffic in front, doesnât matter. No one understands how she does it.
- Biggest weakness is if rival players make a chirp that targets a real insecurity. Short jokes she can handle⊠but if they target her personality, or something personal, that can really get to her.
- General manager. Worst part of his job is trading players. (âBut theyâre friends. How can I separate them?â) However, he will never trade Zoey, Mira or Rumi because they work SO well together.
- Everyone in the hockey world likes Bobby. He wants his team to always be as welcoming as possible, and fosters a culture of respect. Doesnât tolerate any bigoted or discriminatory behaviour from anyone. Embraces queer pride in the locker room and wants everyone to feel like they can be themselves. If the wider league disagrees heâs not afraid to fight them.
- Rumi got all her obsessive strategy-planning and workaholic tendencies from her. But sheâs even worse than Rumi. During the season, and even most of the off season, she struggles to think about anything but the game and how they can win.
- Has won awards for her coaching. First woman to coach a professional menâs team, fought through years of sexism and hockey bros underestimating her, and is now extremely hardened and unfazed by anything. She chose to step away from menâs hockey to promote the less respected womenâs league.
- For this AU the Quebecois-Celine headcanons Iâve seen shared before fits so well. Sheâs a diehard Habs fan. Like, DIEHARD. Becomes a Montreal legend in her own right.
- Ex-hockey star. Won gold at the Olympics back in her day. More than once. Played forward on a line with Miyeong and Thirdlight (name her whatever you want). Wants the future of womenâs hockey to be better than it was for her: better pay, more respect, more opportunities.
- Tough coach. Doesnât go easy on her players. Emphasises hard work and discipline and grit. However, she also emphasises self care to a much greater extent than many coaches. Both physical and mental. Her players can always come to her about anything.
- Sheâs extremely protective of her players. If the refs make a bad call, she will absolutely make her disdain known. She doesnât yell, but sheâs cold and cutting with her words. Everyone is definitely afraid of her.
- Well aware of Rumi, Mira & Zoeyâs relationship. A little concerned at first that it might distract them on the ice, but soon realises they work even better together now: always knowing exactly what the others will do before they do it. Itâs like they share one mind.
