The word polyamory is involved in a lot of discourse, but what does it actually mean?

Polyamorous and monogamous are both ways to describe a relationship structure. Monogamous refers to a relationship that consists of two people who are dating exclusively, whereas polyamorous consists of more than two people who are dating, either exclusively or not.

There are other terms, like polygamy, that people often get confused with polyamory. Polygamy refers specifically to someone having multiple married partners, usually of the opposite sex. Polygyny refers to a man having multiple wives, and polyandry refers to a woman having multiple husbands. Polygyny and polyandry are both forms of polygamy, and all polygamous relationships are polyamorous, however not all polyamorous relationships are polygamous.

Any person of any gender or orientation can be polyamorous.

Although polyamorous and monogamous are relationship structures, they can also be used to label a persons identity. The word ambiamorous is another label that describes someone who is happy in both monogomous and polyamorous relationships.

Obviously I understand when people get upset when some poly folk suggest polyamory as the solution to cheating, or any relationship issues. Bc if the issue is someone is dating more than one person, suggesting polyamory is just saying "deal with it, and stay quiet, & just let your partner cheat".

And obviously if there's already relationship issues, adding more people won't fix anything, it'll just make a messy situation more complicated and messy.

But I don't get why some people insist polyamory is inherently cheating, because if cheating can include a relationship where the people involved are aware of and 100% okay with their partner having other partners, then you're saying cheating isn't inherently bad, that it's just another relationship style, and cheating can be not only a normal but healthy thing, which again would be confusing, cause what are you complaining about?!?!

I mean we all know that's not the case, that's not what cheating means. Cheating is anything/everything that breaks the rules/boundries of the relaitonship, which means cheating has no one singular definition, as it relates to specific actions.

Kissing can be cheating in one relationship and not in another, depending entirely on what the two or more individuals in said relationship are okay with.
