A situation that comes up a lot in poly communities, paraphrased: My boyfriend only wants me to date other women because heās not comfortable with me being with other men. I figure this is reasonable because I am bi, and I donāt really need another man. Itās basically equal, because we can both date any woman we want. But I started feeling attraction to a male friend recently and I donāt know what to do about it. Variations abound, but thatās the basic idea. A vague acceptance of the concept with a nagging feeling that it still isnāt quite fair.Ā
And, believe it or not, sometimes itās:
My boyfriend wants me to only date other women, but Iām straight. What do I do? Seriously. This is what some men "offerā to their straight female partners. Either way, people often post about it because they want to know if itās a common setup. Yes. Yes, it is. But I believe itās also veryĀ problematic. Why? Instead of write about it myself, Iām going to share FIVE different links all on the same topic. There are a couple of major problems with the concept, actually, trans-exclusion being a big one. But even assuming the so-called OPP (One Penis Policy) isnāt actually refering to genitals but is about gender identity (dating men vs women), it comes down to this very simple, very misogynistic concept: GIRLS DONāT COUNT. Here are some wonderful links Iāve found on that topic. (Please be forewarned that thereās a lot of NSFW content in them, because a lot of this topic is specifically about sex.) In online conversations on this topic, a lot of women will defend their relationshipās OPP by sayingĀ āBut Iām genuinely fine with it! I donāt wantĀ to date other men, so why is that a problem?ā The answer: it isnāt a problem. But if itās truly your autonomous choice, what is the reason for calling it a policy?Ā
