Contrary to what some may think, I'm actually stoked as hell for the Friend lore drop. Sure, it's not the scheming mastermind that I thought it would be, but this new framing is almost better imo, because as the muscle henchling for another, bigger-brained antagonist, Friend is allowed, in my mind, to be silly. It can do goofy, nonsensical shit just for the love of the game.
And none of that makes it any less scary, because it can turn on a dime, and often the scary shit is what it finds fun in the first place (and the splitting into a hivemind of Friendlings as a hunting pack are peak horror, no notes)

When i first heard of the pointed tail and then saw the unused sprite for it, my first assumption was that it was the mouse cursor on your computer, but inside of a dark fountain

Sure, in a theoretical chapter 0, a dark fountain could be opened up where the shelter would eventually be built. The dark fountain, open to the skies of hometown, would affect the game itself, warping the window and the mouse cursor until they had a mind of their own as darkners. Your mouse cursor, pointed and connected to the game, with a mind of it's own, should not be followed. But the poor children didn't know that
