that one part of Emergence where u can actually tell which one is Ashton Edwards (middle of the trio!)
Pacific Northwest Ballet, 2025; choreo Pite, 2009
i’m a twitter follower of yours but i needed to find your tumblr so i could tell you that your posts about uu devious duo and the new olivia rodrigo album are literally insane /pos. i love that album and cigarette smoke really resonates with me and then i saw your post about how it’s devious duo pilled and now i can’t listen to it the same because like. ugh i picture it as mapicc’s pov in finding 1000 players (i think that’s the title?? it’s the one before purgatory lmao) when he finally realizes the full extent to which spoke has been lying to him and ugh. “i regret you and how long i stayed, i resent you for not being brave” as in brave enough to tell me what’s been going on and OHHH “tell me something honest so the memories turn dark” as in finally be honest with me and tell me the horrible shit you’ve done so that i can keep being mad at you. because i don’t think mapicc could ever really hate spoke right?? like maybe it’s cope but he wouldn’t be mad forever, surely. and the story isn’t from his pov so there’s kinda no way to know for sure but i think in that time period between mapicc revealing spoke in the cave/popping his totem and finding spoke in the maze/breaking his chestplate, mapicc was really reconsidering their entire friendship. where were the signs that this was fake?? because at least from my understanding mapicc thinks spoke has been faking their friendship (because jamato led him to believe so) so like. maybe he was thinking back on all of the happy memories that he has with spoke and trying to find where it all went wrong and he misses that. i think spoke and mapicc both miss the early days where they were destroying duped items and running from the mafia, and mapicc doesn’t want to miss those days because he wants to be mad at spoke. AND THEN “give me back my time and i will give you back your heart” IS SOOOOO. UGH. like mapicc feels like his friendship with spoke has been a lie!!! he feels like his time has been wasted and in a sick sort of way i think he hopes spoke regrets it! and he really has had spoke’s heart all this time so he will give it back if spoke can reveal if every beautiful and terrible moment of their friendship was just another way for spoke to feel better about himself. “it’s bone dry, bitter and hollow, you’ll be miles away tomorrow, why’d i try at all?” this is just. a beautiful moment in the song first of all like the strings are something crazy. but i think it’s how mapicc feels about their friendship at this point. i think both spoke and mapicc have pretended for far too long that they’re still kids who can make mistakes and have things be okay afterwards and not grown adults whose actions have consequences. i think they’ve both been riding the high of the early days of their friendship when every atom of their beings was intertwined and they could eternally fuck around because they’re spoke-and-mapicc, and that’s how it’s always been, and how it always will be. and at least before jamato shows up to take them both to purgatory, mapicc wants spoke to live. he wants him to live and he wants to know nothing about spoke’s life going forward. they’ll both be “miles away tomorrow” so there’s no point in trying to fix things when they’ve been broken beyond repair. this was so long and rambling but you’ve infected my brain with devious duo worms so it’s kinda your fault /j. i will also take this opportunity to say i love your fics,, your characterization is always so interesting to read and your metaphors are crazy deep and i wish to write even half as good as you someday. i am also very interested in the au behind your latest fic where spoke is saved from uu by mapicc and minute. i love the idea of game-ifying the process of working through trauma and deception because it really is just so devious duo for them to try and make apologizing fun lmao. i would love to hear any more headcanons or ideas you have for that au if you have any 👀 that fic is so beautiful ugh devious duo make me SICK. anyways feel free to tell me if i got something wrong or if you disagree with me!!!
THANKJ YOUUU LOL.
YES YSEYESYESSEY cigarette smoke is SO THAT EP if the song was out when the ep was… oooo id be spamming it bro UGH. YES YES YES I SAID THIS ABT IT TOO. I don’t think mapicc can ever Really not care abt spoke, even if mapiccs pissed and hates him, he couldnt ever not care (as in like. Care. Not as in “be chalant” and “give a fuck” but those also work. I wrote a fic about LITERALLY that. Funny enough i was listening to oliva rodrigo while writing it.
Give me back my timmeee and i will give you back your hearttt, yes yes YES. Two years two years. Its not even in a sick way, spoke SHOULD regret that shit. I interpret it as like, both of those things (time and heart back) are impossible for them. Mapicc owns spokes love forever and time is not something you can get back yk.
Olivias talent bro UGHHH. Whyddd iii tryyyyyyyyy atttttttt alllllllllllllllllllllllll. YEAH. I dunno if u saw my post about cigarette smoke but i swear i said this exact thing. I dont for sure know about the pretending theyre still kids, but I do think neither of them really Super think about certain consequences. Actually i think mapicc used to be that way, but he does now. At least, did? I think mapicc entirely abandoned his morals (or tried to) when he got into purgatory. He said he wanted to fight till he got banned. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Deadass? I don’t think their friendship was ever like… Hmm how do i say. They were never intertwined, I think; theres always an opportunity that mapicc decides to leave, i dont think they ever like. HOW DO I PUT THIS. They love each other. Mapicc forgives spoke, mapicc CHOOSES to forgive spoke. It’s not ever because of being close or intertwined or wtvr, it’s because mapicc cares about spoke and values him.
I guess what I’m saying is that spoke and mapicc aren’t intertwined and never have bveen. They are very very different and mapicc is… okay theres like. If they were intertwined, theyd be on the same level, but mapicc is more sane than spoke. Is the best way for me to put this. Spoke depends on mapicc a lot more than mape depends on spoke. So its not equal. I dont know if this makes sesne. Do u get it tho lol. Intertwined implies same outlook, in my mind. Omfg holy yap. My point is that mapicc doesnt get why spoke is the way he is. Mape doesnt understand it, but hes there to support. Not intertwined, more like leaning pillars. Does anyone understand me??? hello???
YES THO “miles away tomorrow” as in mapicc wants spoke to get better but he wants nothing to do with it, and “miles away tomorrow” as in their relationship is so fucked that theyre just never gonna be anywehere near each other ever again.
DO NOT WORYR ABOUT THE RAMBLING. We yes WE ramble and i LOVEEEE asks like this. Yw for the brainworms ^_^ :D AND OMG THATNK YOUUU EEEKK >.< Characterization and metaphors are my biggest strong suits for SURE. My prose #my prose.
Something else i like to think im good at: PLOTS!! This is Pillows N Blankets au!! PnB!! Basically, when minmape go to the end for mins stashes, they talk abt spoke and min brings up the idea of ripping him out of uu. Mapicc is at first hard against this, because breaking someones lorelocks (beginning notes of the fic) abruptly and forcefully like that instead of naturally like, HURTS. And also is insanely invasive and nonconsensual. But then minute is like dude look at him and in canon i dont think this would happen but hey #au, so mapicc really thinks it over, takes a while, then goes fuck okay.
He and min plan between conflicts, spoke subconsciously freaks out without his therapuppy, and sets up leo stasis thingige. Except then, in the middle of the law final stand, mapicc drags spoke away to whatever thing breaks lorelocks (lowk dont know what yet LOL), then gets them both launched off the server. The funny thing about code is that its really all strings with a bunch of static and friction-- kind of velcro? And mapicc and spokes homeservers are the same one (the lifesteal offserver server), so when they float in the void between worlds, the universe defaults to “okay you arent supposed to be here for so long, go home” and resets them to the lifesteal offserver server.
The lsoss (pronounced L-sauce) is basically just like, a chiller version of lifesteal, homeserver, place to chill. Lifesteal is inbetween seasons atp. No idea WHICH seasons tho to be real i dont have a timeline figured out. I think lsworld comes b4 uu does tho. Maybe uu is after all lstl seasons. Wtvr who gaf
Anyway, again, breaking lorelocks like that is dangerous, and making the universe forcefully reset you also has consequences, so for a few hours, spoke and mapicc forget everyone except the other(bc all of their codestrings were near each other when the reset happened). Along with this, they’re a lot more like animalistic, because the link between like, Mapicc’s “Player” code and his “Species: Hellhound” code is a little fried, he leans towards hellhound more than human. Spoke on the other hand, leans more towards human, and gets mad emotional and pissed bc he just had something noncon done to him (even if it was for his own good). Not even to mention the physical pain for spoke-- mapicc had connection to SPOKE more than UU, spoke had connections around UU so he has more bleeding wounds(figuratively).
So spoke is gasping for breath keeled over, mapicc is getting spideysense telling him to get out of the open and get warm, and theyre just at lsoss spawn freaking out arguing and spoke is like mapicc how Could you and mapic cis like Bro we need to get somewhere safe-- and then fucking planetlord is like ummmm.! And then mapicc raises his hackles and spoke yells and planet decides this is out of her paygrade and messages hannah.
Hannah shows up ummmm basically devious get acclimated. After some time or something, min shows up w wemmbegg(min whitelisted egg, its not a lifestealer only server), then even later, parrot shows up w/ jumper and shares lore and stuff ummm. Idk how the reconciliation with ash or leo goes, but i know that like. Once youre out of a lorelock server, the actions people did in the server seem less. So it takes a conversation, but like. Spoke talks with ash and its like talking to a friend who messed up and feels bad(CCash has said he doesnt think uuash is in the wrong and has a whole backstory lol).
Okay yea we’re both yappers. But thats basically it ajskdhasjdhak i have stuff to better explain lorelocks if anyone wants more. ANyways!! Yes, gameifying healing yessirrr ITS SO THEM Its so lifesteal to make healing fun. THANK YOUUU I agree with most of ur analysis!!

Explanations underneath
I saw Pacific Northwest Ballet's Roméo et Juliette last night (the Maillot Ballet de Monte Carlo one) and it was a doozy, so I'm outlining all my thoughts here. Disclaimer: there will be spoilers, extensive discussion of symbolism, and overenthusiastic rambling herein. This is part one of three.
To begin, I want to explain the tone of the production. The program notes from the original read as follows:
"Jean-Christophe Maillot has taken formal inspiration from the episodic character of Prokofiev's score, structuring the action in a manner akin to cinematic narrative. This Romeo et Juliette highlights the dualities and ambiguities of adolescence. Torn between contradictory impulses, between tenderness and violence, fear and pride, the lovers are caught in a tragedy that exemplifies their youth and the extreme emotions and internal conflicts that characterize that time of life. (...) In evoking this fragile and volatile state of being, the [set] painter Ernest Pignon-Ernest created a decor marked by transparency and lightness: a play of simple forms that reveals an underlying complexity of meaning."
I'll use these three ideas to structure my thoughts about this production. First, I'll address the (meta)narrative of the story; next, the way that this production focuses on the contrast between youth and adulthood; and thirdly, the filmographic visuals and symbolism of this production and what makes them so effective.
Maillot takes some creative liberties with the characters and events of the story, as any good interpreter must do when translating from one medium to another. Most substantially, Maillot turns Friar Lawrence into the narrator of the tale. He is the first and last character we see, horrified and mourning. The Friar as a character then becomes a fascinating dichotomy between a player in the story, ignorant of the future like the rest, and a wretched prophet trying desperately to change the tide of destiny.
In his first moments onstage, his limbs stretch in sharp angles to become the hands of time, ticking steadily forward.
The beginning of it all (photo of Karel Cruz from a previous production)
He brings new meaning to the phrase "tortured by the narrative". His every action has the touch of agony upon it. Like in Hadestown (though this production preceded it by 20 years), our narrator is fond of the central young lovers. He wants them happy, though they are dead at both beginning and end. The Friar's interludes begin, generally, with the ticking of the clock and the freezing of time. He rushes around the stage, the sole person with the power of movement in the midst of a still tableau. Periodically, he tries to stop the violence, or to get someone's attention or move them elsewhere, or to stop the set from changing and time from marching on, but he never succeeds. The action continues without him, and all he can do is let time unfreeze. The Friar is as much at the mercy of destiny as anyone, if not moreso. He is both puppet and puppeteer.
For those lovers of symbolism, Friar's character is the most symbolically rich of them all. As a function of lying both within and without the narrative, he takes on many meanings throughout the ballet. His sober appearance references the suits of early filmmakers and conductors as he clasps his arms in a sort of “scene start” or conducts the action like a concertmaster. At other times, his doublet seems to call to mind Shakespeare himself— his two acolytes in flowing white roll around on the floor like the flipping pages of a book or unroll a long white prop piece like a manuscript.
Though he is something between a narrator, a prophet, and an instrument of destiny, he also becomes a personification of death. But he is reluctant to the last, his stoic pain unmissable. Often, his acolytes have to force his hands into the necessary work. This is a Death that is haunted by the many young lives he is forced to collect, like the fond narrator of The Book Thief. At times, he and his two acolytes also take on visual aspects of the trinity of fates- the spinner; the alotter; and the cutter, the inevitable, which is to say, death. Their three bodies form the ribbed wheel of a spindle. Their arms weave and interlock. Their hands cut a lifetime short.
As a natural symbol of church and Christ, he and his acolytes twist into the visual shape of a church, and he is frequently pulled up into the shape of a cross in the air. The messaging lies somewhere in the spectrum of “God is powerless to help you here” and “God wants this to happen and will accept no deviations,” in my opinion.

There are some, I’m sure, who would prefer to focus directly on the tale of the young lovers without adornment. But the Friar provides a poignant outside point of view for the story. We find catharsis in this mirror of the audience’s own anger and grief in knowing every beat of the story before it ever begins. Cassandra’s powers were a curse for a reason; there is a special, personal kind of tragedy for the person who sees an oncoming disaster and is powerless to stop it. (Sound pertinent, anyone?)
Miles Pertl, the Friar in the secondary cast
In the most obvious moment of departure from the original script, the members of the houses attend a puppet show after the ball where our two lovers meet. With a black curtain held up, dancers wiggle around puppet heads that look like our main leads. At first, it’s all in-good-fun mockery of Romeo’s love for Juliet. But then the show continues. Tybalt goes for Benvolio. Mercutio gets in the way and goes down. Romeo strangles Tybalt, goes to Juliet. Kills himself. She, in turn, kills herself. The contrast between the silly style of puppet show and the reminder of the dark content that will follow brings to mind the cynicism of young generations who grow up with the belief that everything will crash down upon them. They might as well laugh and do their TikTok dances while the sky falls through no fault of their own. There is another message here as well: cautionary tales do no good if the people who need to hear refuse to listen. Romeo walks out when they mock him; he does not see the ending.
The middle portion of the puppet show in rehearsal
When the curtain finally falls, the puppet masters are revealed to be the Friar and his two acolytes, once again trying to tell the truth to anyone who will listen. Seeing this, I did wonder for a moment if it would all go differently. If the Friar and the company knew the ending, they could change the story and avert the fates of the dead. But it all played out as fated. After the Friar has given Juliet poison and Romeo has killed himself, the Friar creeps around the edge of a set piece to where the two lovers lie motionless. He sits down on the bed, barely looking at Romeo, who has been a dead man ever since the Friar first saw the future. When he reaches for Juliet’s hand to wake her up, he keeps his eyes elsewhere for her brief moments of joy before reality finds her. He creeps to a corner of the room and stares unwillingly at the wall while Juliet kills herself behind him. By the end, he has given up on changing anything. He just wants to play his required role so that it ends at last.
