SUPER SHY — COLLEGE! TODD ANDERSON X GN! SHY! READER HEADCANNONS
being a new student to the college in your area was... rough to say the least. you had transferred over from your home town college due to issues with your roommate (what a [REDACTED]). part of you was excited, but a itty bitty part of your heart missed your home town: how close you were to your family, how familiar you were with the area, your friends... it felt like starting over. you had hopes though, and you were determined to make this place feel like home.
genre: pure fluff, pining? slow burn? a smudge bit of crack
content warnings: unedited, lowercase intended, grammatical errors to be expected, neil lives happily ever after!! also all the dead poets are still friends, inaccurate portrayal of american college (sorry), this is probably more like friends to lovers (📼 anon sorry.. hope you still like it), todd is an english major, reader is a film major, i wrote this so cheesy and i love it, this takes place between fall and winter, if u have a flowers allergy then im sorry
authors note: based on this request. HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
✧ being a film major, it was expected that you would be an extroverted ball of energy eager to interact with others — and boy, you wish you were. don't get me wrong, you are eager to make friends, it's just not your fault you're a bit quieter and socially awkward. your first day at classes was uneventful, except for one particularly extroverted ball of energy- you learnt that his name was neil perry, who had glasses sitting atop his nose and a friendly aura radiating off of him.
✧ the class was full, all seats taken, bar for a seat next to him. as soon as you sat down, he turned to you with an eager smile as he introduced himself, seemingly being able to tell you were new. politely, you exchanged pleasantries, although you spoke in a tone that was barely above a whisper. "i'm sorry, i didn't hear you, what's your name?", you cleared your throat and repeated your name, a little louder, looking at the boy briefly before gazing down at the desk.
✧ neil, being friends with the most infamous shy person, todd anderson, knows a shy person when he sees one; from the body language to the tone of the voice, he could tell you were curled up in your shell. now, neil has met plenty of shy people in his lifetime, but you in particular really reminded him of the first time he met todd. he hated the thought of you not having any friends, especially after you told him you had just moved here from a different town. so at the end of class, after observing at how grateful you were for having one potential friend, he decided you deserved more.
"hey, you know what, you should come meet my friends. we have a study session tonight and, uh— i do need help with some of the notes from this class — it'll be fun!"
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST INTERACTION WITH TODD LIKE?
✿ after meeting neil in your film class (and him inviting you to meet his friends), you went back to your apartment feeling giddy. just because you were shy doesn't mean you weren't enthralled about the possibility of making some friends, especially if they were going to be like neil. speaking of neil, he had told you to head to the second floor of the study block, telling you you'd probably hear them before you see them. so you anxiously waited until it was late afternoon, packed your film textbook, notebooks and pens into your bag. fortunately, your apartment was a short walk from your college, and before you knew it you were on campus.
✿ once you stepped into the study building, a small bit of doubt settled in the back of your mind; what if they didn't like you? what if neil was lying and being an asshole? what if they thought you were rude because of her shy you were? these thoughts raced in your head as you ascended the stairs, finally arriving at the second- "knox, shut your trap about your lover and pull your head in! you're meant to be helping-", "oh you two, cut it out!" at first, you were startled, looking over to the room with a closed door, which is where the commotion was coming from. but then you heard neils voice trying to diffuse the argument. so you walked towards the door, arms folded across your chest. you raised your hand to knock, but the door flew open before you had the chance. and there stood a boy with blond hair.
✿ you met eyes with the boy, seemingly lost in his blue irises. he looked equally as shocked, his cheeks dusted with a light pink. you were snapped out of your trance by neil calling your name excitedly. "you're here! this is who i was talking about, guys!" and suddenly, neil appeared behind the shoulder of the boy before you who you had come to learn was todd. neil introduced you to everyone — steven, richard, charlie, knox, gerard and todd. the boys were lovely for the most part, saying hello or making a comment here and there (i'm looking at you dalton), apart from todd, who said hi quietly. they all talked about their majors, steven and pitts were right into science and astronomy, richard had a fond interest in psychology, and todd was an english major — is what knox told you. naturally, you had picked up that todd was very similar to you, so you decided to muster up the courage to ask him more about his major.
"oh- is that like poetry? or, uh, more literature?" you asked, your tone soft as you fiddled with your pen. todd, who was taken aback, looked up from him notebook to stare at you wordlessly. he cleared his throat. "uhm, poetry." you nodded, your face radiating heat from, well you didn't know what. embarrassment from his lack of response? the way he stared at you? his voice? steven, who was sat next to you, could tell you weren't expecting such a curt response. "oh don't mind todd— he'll warm up to you, i promise." he smiled, giving your back a pat. gerard leant forward past steven to look at you, as he was sitting next to him. "yeah! he's just...shy."
WHAT'S YOURS AND TODDS BOND LIKE?
✧ steven and gerard were right; it took time for you two to finally open up to one another. of course you also opened up with the others, but something was different with todd. maybe it was because he was shy and so were you.
✧ overtime you two found your own way of growing close. it was often that todd always sat or stood next to you, and that became an unspoken rule among the group; going to the study room? leave a seat next for you for todd. walking around campus looking for a café? todd sneaks his way next to you, walking close with his hands in the pockets of his pants. you also had a habit of subconsciously leaning on him when you were tired, your head sometimes falling onto his shoulder; he never moves though.
✧ you were both listeners, but todd adored listening to you finally talk about how much you loved film; he loved the way your eyes light up as you word vomit about one of the films you did an analysis for one your assignments. likewise, listening to todd quietly talk about poetry (or even just watching him scribble poems in his notebook) was comforting for you.
✧ i think todd would give you things if you needed it (regardless if you needed it); a pen? a book (he remembered you expressing interest in it)? he probably does it one of two ways; the first way, for more mundane things, todd would do it wordlessly, handing it to you without even meeting your eyes. the second way, for things that might be more personal, he'd probably hold it out, stammering and mumbling about how he remembered you talking about the item once.
✧ you stare at todd. a lot. whenever he's working on a poem, you're looking. whenever he's lost in conversation with neil or knox, you're eyes are glued to him, even if you're on the other side of the room. and don't think you're slick, because they all notice.
✧ once todd finally warms up to you properly, he is a warm bundle of joy, dropping discrete and sassy one liners that make you laugh out loud. i see him messing with you a lot (like how he did to cameron in the bathrooms when they were getting ready for neils play); maybe jokingly untying your shoelaces when you're not looking, tickling your sides to catch you off guard, or snatching the film script you've been working on out of your hands (ahem).
✧ when you open up to todd, you often talk about your worries and what's on your mind. he is a literal darl to you, letting you pour your heart out. if you were to be overwhelmed or upset to the point where you're letting the waterworks flow, he (once again) wordlessly wipes them from your cheeks in one quick motion.
THE CONFESSION
✿ they're not stupid, and todd knows it. it takes a lot of convincing from the boys for todd to confess his profound love for you; mainly neil and knox, who were absolutely rooting for you two. charlie told todd all of his personal favourite pick-up lines (which todd politely accepted even though he would never in a hundred years use them), cameron gave him the rundown on the pros and cons of confessing to you, not wanting todd to get upset. gerard and steven helped him pick out flowers.
✿ you knew you had feelings festering inside you. you couldn't help yourself. would you ever confess? no, no you wouldn't. even though you had grown rather close to the boys after your first encounter, you still felt like an outsider. they were all together throughout their school year. so imagine your surprise the day todd finally confesses how he feels about you.
dusk is about to arrive and you're still hunched over a ridiculous amount of homework, practically drowning in it. your eyes were struggling to stay open, but you couldn't stop. you had so much homework, and you could feel the stress bubbling up inside. then, you heard a knock at your apartment door. it wasn't unusual for one or all of the boys to come knocking, usually asking if you wanted to do something. unfortunately, you would have to decline, as you had to finish the assignments and homework. so you stood up and dragged yourself to the front door. rubbing your eye with one hand, your other hand reached for the door knob and twisted. "hey guys- sorry, i can't-" you paused as you looked at the sight in front of you. before your eyes was todd, standing there in his winter coat with a small bouquet of flowers in one hand and a piece of paper in the other. his cheeks and nose a shade of light red from the chilly winter air. he looked at you for a brief moment, then cleared his throat and stuttered out a couple quiet "uh-uhms"; then he quietly read you the poem he poured his heart into. with shaking hands and an even shakier voice, todd finally let you know how he felt, and you stood there with the biggest smile on your face.
YOUR RELATIONSHIP NOW
✧ he buys you physical copies of all your favourite movies; he gets super excited when he sees a collector edition of your favourite movie/s. todd actually loves watching movies with you, often snuggled under a blanket and shovelling food into your mouths.
✧ you thought the physical touch was bad? it gets so much more worse when you two finally start dating. hugs, hand holding, playing with his hair, him drawing circles on your knee, just general touchiness. on that note, i see him as a back hugger; od not ask why, whether its one that lingers or a brief one when you guys cross paths on campus. todd really likes backhugging you, regardless of his height.
✧ you two stargaze. not much more needs to be said.
✧ todd sees you as his muse, his inspiration when it comes to writing poems. he shows them to you too, his ears burning (even though he has opened up, he is still shy) when you read it back to him with a wide smile.
✧ you blush. so much. around him. like yes, you're together, you both love eachother, but you get so bashful when todd literally does anything. you find him so endearing, from his love for his friends and poetry, to his quirks, you adore him.
✧ you and todd have matching articles of clothing. matching socks, matching sweaters.... heavy on the matching socks though. you guys definitely have some sort of matching pyjamas/pajamas that you wear on movie nights.
✧ because you and todd are so shy, i see you two doing a lot of at home hobbies or 'dates' together. sure, you guys go out to dinner occasionally, but i see you guys baking together a lot; cupcakes, cookies, you name it! also this might be random but hear me out.. i feel like you two could learn how to knit or crochet together, and when you two aren't swamped in work, you're crocheting or knitting. on that note, you two would definitely make some sort of blanket together.
✧ STUDY DATES!!!!!!!!!! oh my gosh. you personally love the library, and so does todd; its peaceful, quiet, intimate in a sense, but something tells me todd would love to go sit outside somewhere; maybe under a tree or on the college campus' grass area (if you know what i mean).
✧ adding onto the study dates, you two definitely love the comfortable silence shared between you two when studying, or just in general. if you guys just wanted to go on a walk to the park to clear your minds, you'd walk hand in hand in comfortable silence.
✧ okay so imagine this... i think the boys, after welton, kept contact with mr keating somehow (maybe he doesn't end up leaving, idk okay), and he would SO introduce you to mr keating, a smile beaming across his face. mr keating would absolutely adore you, seeing todd's shyness in you but also recognising you for being your own person. i feel like keating would say jokingly to todd, "i told you mr. anderson, carpe diem."
