the soft hum of the buzzing lights in the tiny gas station was the only thing filling the ambiance in the air. daniela walked with her hands in her coat, her eyes settling on the last bag of trollis hanging on the shelf.
âthank god.â she said under her breath.
you happened to peak over, grabbing a twix bar.
âchocolates are better you know?â you said to her, looking over at her, danielaâs gaze meeting yours.
âyeah? how so?â
âtheyâre more.. chocolatey.â your words coming out in a soft hum, a smile appearing on danielaâs face.
donât. run.
her eyes flinched slightly, feeling an unsettling presence around her. she turned around, to see jonah behind her, a more foggy version of him, as a ghost.
âyou know better, daniela.â jonah spoke, leaning on the shelf.
she shook it off, rubbing her eyes, seeing as he was gone. she whipped her head, you were distracted, picking out a different candy. daniela took that as her option to get the hell out of the store.
she stumbled backwards, placing the candy there on the shelf, she rushed out the store.
âi- i said to quit following me already.â daniela spoke, fumbling inside her coat pocket for her keys. she unlocked her car, settling inside, as she ran her hands over her face.
âyou always do this, jonah. get the hell out of my head.â she spoke to herself, mumbling under her breath.
the sound of her car engine was loud enough to make you snap out of a trance or twix or kitkat, you looked over to the unknown woman, to only see she was gone.
âhow long was i trying to decide..â you mumbled under your breath.
âi didnât even get her name.â
you huffed, grabbing the twix, and the trollis she had left.
âââ
the next time you guys ran into each other was in the cereal aisle, same store, different area. how sweet!
âyou disappeared on me, like as if you were a ghost. also get frosted flakes theyre so good.â you said, speaking, leaning against the shelf slightly.
âironic, hm?â she mumbled, âyou wouldnât know.â
âi would like to know.â you fired back.
âmaybe itâs for the better you donât.â she blurted, looking up at you.
âjust give me a chance.â you pleaded, you reached into your pocket, taking the two day old trollis, you grabbed a marker from a nearby shelf. you wrote your number down on it.
âjust text me, iâll take you on a date, all expenses paid by me.â
donât.
âdonât do it, dani.â jonah said as he swarmed around, going next to you.
âso? just text me, okay?â you said leaving the store quietly.
âwhy do you never let me try and date, i broke things off, i should be haunting you.â
âbecause dani, we both know youâre not over me.â
âi am.â she snapped, her tone getting louder. before realizing she looked probably insane talking to herself, she looked around seeing as nobody was even bothered by her.
âwhy her even? because sheâs nice?â jonah complained, swooshed around the shelves.
âbecause sheâs different, she trying to make it seem like she cares unlike you did.â
âyeah cause sheâs a girl.â jonah laughed.
âshut up. itâs not cause sheâs a girl, she tries.â daniela said, as she looked over to see, he was gone, once again.
âfuck, iâm crazy.â she said grabbing a random cereal box, and going to the check out. she stood there dumbfounded, scanning the frosted flakes, hell she doesnât even like frosted flakes. she just remembered you saying that you liked them.
daniela looked down at the gummy worms in her hand, and shoved them into the bag.
âââ
after a while she gained confidence enough to text you and set up a plan to meet, and well she decided on going to the nearest beach.
she wore a bikini top, that covered just enough to seem appropriate for a first âdateâ, with some jeans shorts, and sandals.
you wore a loose grey shirt, with jean shorts, and ur birkins, matching daniela slightly. walking along the shore line, she looked over to you, seeing as you were already looking at her.
âthis is nice.â she hummed softly, moving closer to you.
âyeah itâs peaceful.â you smiled at her, nudging her playfully, a small smile appearing on both your faces.
the sky had gone from a fury of pink and blue and purple color to a darker blue signifying the coming of the night. you both walked alongside each other getting to know each other, sandals in hand, the now cold sand beneath their feet.
âyou like this place? like the whole beach?â you asked, looking ahead of you.
âthe beach is kind of my thing, i come here when i need to clear my head, have fun with my friends, or just in my free time really.â
you smiled to yourself, as you could feel yourself purposely brush her hand. and she knew it, dani knew what you trying to do.
yet she didnât try and pull away, she didnât feel the need to. she felt safe with you and complete again.
âyouâre not tense like you were in at the bodega.â you spoke to her.
âmaybe itâs the ocean.â lie. jonah wasnât even trying to bother her, thatâs why she seemed lighter.
âor maybe itâs you.â you spoke to her, finally intertwining your fingers with hers together.
but if it was her, it meant, she would self sabotage herself.
and thatâs exactly what happened.
when it got colder and the waves began to swoosh harder onto the sand, you both had decided to just go cruise around til then.
the second you shut her door, jonah had appeared in the back seat.
âyou enjoying her so far? sheâll find out about me eventually.â he said smug, manspreading.
âshut up, leave.â she said, looking at you throw the rear view mirror, seeing you were coming back.
you opened your door, an settled in.
âwhere would you like to go to first?â you asked a soft smile, placing your hand on the gear shift, driving off.
âanywheres fine.â she said in a low hum. her energy shifting.
a long quiet moment happened.
âyouâre distant now. youâre very hard to read.â you said, hand gripping the steering wheel, keeping your eyes on the road.
âiâm not.â dani fought softly,
âsheâs figuring it out.â jonah spoke.
âdaniela,â you spoke a soft tone in your words.
âyou donât know me.â
âi want to.â you said immediately after she spoke, as if you knew what she was going to say.
âsheâll get tired eventually.â jonah spoke, fixing his fitted cap.
âitâs a waste of time, youâll leave.â daniela spoke a lump in her throat growing.
âthatâs not for you to decide but me. you havenât given me a chance long enough. i wonât leave, iâm still here.â
daniela looked over at you, and suddenly it went quiet, everyone went quiet. and in that moment, she decided to not listen to her ghosts, but to you.
âiâm here, daniela.â
