I want to start writing again, but I’m so out of practice. Therefore I’m really interested in how authors write their stories. What is your process for this? Like you have an idea that you like and then what? For instance do you plot it from front to end? How much do you develop the characters? Etc. Etc.
It’s great you want to start writing again! Yeah, it can be hard to get back into the routine of everything, I get that.
My process is rather chaotic, I would say. The first thing I have is mostly an idea, a first scene I want to see written, some dialogue which sounds really good in my ears. Something catchy which brings me actually start planning some stuff.
What needs to happen in order for that scene to happen? What are the requirements, the emotional background, the involved people? Are there any problems or a conflict maybe playing a part in there?
I will be simply a little narcisisst here and use End My Loneliness as an example. At first, I had this very image of a hermit with strange powers who gets persuaded by Team 7 and a developing crush on Kakashi to go to Konoha. With this image in my mind, I asked myself what would be the catch. My thought process was:
A hermit -> lives alone in the woods -> doesn’t trust people out of reasons -> Team 7 needs to work for the trust/to actually make her travel with them
The first conflict is born. Basically, I have one scene and build the entire story around it. In the process of building the story, more scenes pop up. The next step is to connect these new scenes to the currently existing construct and put everything into a timeline.
Though, I don’t like to plan absolutely everything to the last miniscule detail. I like to have some kind of freedom in my writing. That’s why I mostly have this half-planned construct ready when I start writing. While I’m writing, I still build the characters and the story and also some unplanned (or planned) foreshadowing. So, no plotting from start to end. But that is different from writer to writer, so I would say you have to find out what works best for you :D
For characters it’s basically the same. You have to find out what their most defining feature is. Again, I will use EML as an example here, for the MC it was her distrust of humans and her journey to overcome said distrust. Everything else - her grumpiness, her defenses, her initial anger at the situation - stem from that distrust and define her. From there on, it’s relatively easy to spin the story further.
Remember though, that these processes are the result of by now 4 - 5 years of active writing. It takes a while to build them up, to practice them and work out what works best for you. I hope this insight will help you a little bit in getting back into your writing ^^
