Original Sinners
If the multiverse is real, then thereās definitely a universe where someone walked into the Pretty Little Liars : Original Sin writing room and said :
āHey! So Iāve been thinkingā¦ The original premise that we came up with doesnāt make much senseā¦ So what if we just focused on the 1999/2000 timeline instead and made a prequel to the original show that would explain the gruesome origins of āAā through a story that follows five high school bullies trying to escape a vengeful killer? I mean, we already have the actresses and the sets, so now we just have to come up with a compelling story!ā
And the other writers agreed and the show became very successful because it was very well-written. These actresses are now celebrities and Marlene King is seething because someone managed to make a show that is better than the original simply by being caring and consistent with the writing.
The concept of a group of girls being targeted by someone for the secret sin their parents committed 20 years prior, sounded interesting. But the execution was meh. Not to mention how the Ā«Ā as well as their own (sins) Ā» from the marketing was completely ignored, because Imogen and her friends never did anything wrong. And yet it could have worked if :
1) The 2022 girls had not all been the direct daughters of the original sinners and some of them had been their nieces or distant relatives (because them all being the only daughters of those five women and conveniently born at the same time was too convenient and unrealistic)
2) They actually had had really ugly secrets of their own, had been more morally gray and the reason why Ā«Ā AĀ Ā» was targeting them actually made sense? It could have been something like, their parents/relatives living their lives as if nothing happened and never really facing any consequences for it, so Ā«Ā AĀ Ā» decides to ruin their lives by targeting their kids and destroying their families, just like Ā«Ā AāsĀ Ā» family was destroyed by their actions (rather than the random Ā«Ā the siNs of thE mOther haVe to faLL upOn the daUghterĀ Ā» thing they pulled, which was absolutely ridiculous). Since Rose Waters had to watch her daughter be bullied and receive no protection until Angela took her own life because of all the pain everybody had put her through, it would have made sense for Ā«Ā AĀ Ā» to force the not-so-former bullies watch their own kids turn into worse people because of Aās blackmailings.
But honestly, I think it would have been better if the show had been solely about the teenage versions of the mothers in 1999/2000. I do think there was potential with the 2022 timelineās characters but they would have been better off in a separate show inspired by PLL but with no real connection to it. Because itās hard to make an āOriginal Sinā narrative template make sense when thereās like five main characters, who canāt all be directly related to people or specific events from another timeline without it being too convenient or unrealistic.
Thinking about the wasted potential of Pretty Little Liars : Original Sin again. I believe the 2022 timeline with Imogen and her friends was unnecessary and uninteresting HOWEVER, I do believe it had potential! Thereās two reasons as to why it didnāt work : 1) They had the girls be related to the 1999 Liars and 2) The girls werenāt even Liars, they did not have dirty secrets that could have ruined their lives. They were completely passive in what was happening to them because they did nothing wrong nor did they have anything to do with what happened 22 years before.
And yet, when you look at their storylines, there was a LOT of potential in each of them to make them more like the girls from the og show! Karen was mad at Imogen for allegedly kissing her boyfriend, when it wasnāt consensual on Imogenās partā¦ But what if it had been, though? What if Imogenās pregnancy had been the result of a consensual relationship with her best friendās boyfriend and she had to hide it from Karen? What if instead of Kelly existing, her arc was given to Imogen? She could have been Karenās secretly jealous best friend and after Karen dies, we could have seen her slowly try to impersonate and mimic Karenās looks and mannerisms to the point where it becomes creepy and suspicious (this would also have given Karenās character an actual purpose in the story)? What if Faran did actually try to sabotage Karen to get the role of the Black Swan because of the pressure her mother put on her to be the best? What if Tabby had stolen someoneās movie idea for a contest (similar to how Spencer stole Melissaās essay)? What if Noa had been an insecure girl who did do drugs to get supplements for her boyfriend in order to get his validation or something? And what if Minnie was, Idk, cyberbullying people? And āAā could have been using all of that against them!

To this day I still donāt understand how they had such a perfect cast for such interesting characters with such an intriguing storyline and did literally NOTHING with them. Like, Sidney gave off so much Main Character energy and the actress who played her has such a unique beauty? She looks like a literal doll and would have fit so perfectly in a show with a pristine, girly aesthetic (which is what a PLL show should be btw, even one that leans more into slasher horror)! And the one who plays Davie looks so similar to Sasha Pieterse! The way she delivered her few lines was so cool like, she was so sneaky and manipulative?? Them and the other three were the true stars of the show because they made me so invested in them despite the little screen time they had! I know Iāve complained about this multiple times already but the wasted potential here is just too astonishing!
