Plectranthus argentatus
Plectranthus is a large genus in the Mint Family (Lamiaceae), and this is a species native to eastern Australia. I have heard that it has been transferred to the related genus Coleus, but I have not read up on the reasoning behind this. In any case, it is a great plant for dry shade, with its leaves covered with silvery hairs that make them gleam. The flowers are quite small and certainly not showy, but they are attractive when seen up close.

The variegated foliage of what may well have been Plectranthus ciliatus ‘Guacamole’ (Swedish ivy) makes this tender perennial ideal for summer display containers. Softwood cutting can be taken in the autumn to create new plants for the next season. The plant will need protection in a frost free environment over the winter.

Plectranthus parviflorus, known by Alaala wai nui in Hawaiian, is a plant native to the Hawaiian islands as well as other places throughout the Oceania region. This plant from the mint family is one of the easiest grown natives in Hawaii and once established can actually become somewhat weedy, readily growing in dry conditions, even in sidewalk cracks and the crotches of trees making it semi-epiphytic. The leaves, stem, buds, and ultimately calyx are all fuzzy which together with the ease of growing and willingness to flower make it popular as an ornamental native species.
