I’ve seen many people say that we shouldn’t hate certain characters because they’re “realistic.” but that’s exactly why we hate them, because they are like real people, selfish and greedy. that’s the whole point of the show—to reveal how our selfish actions, which we justify as “just being realistic,” affect other people’s lives.
we don’t hate these characters because they choose between saving one and saving six, or saving their own lives, but because they bring death to those whose deaths they didn’t need to win the game. especially in the second and third seasons, these people voted to stay and kill more people instead of splitting the money. yes, they needed money—but they could’ve taken the money they won and found other ways to get the rest, instead of guaranteeing the deaths of hundreds of people. this is what a good, empathetic person would do, but selfish, greedy, realistic people choose to stay and kill, and that’s what the show is about, that’s what we need to change.
