I originally learned about plague doctors in the 8th grade because I really liked learning about Carnevale, and they became a huge special interest long before they were in the mainstream eye. I have a really deep adoration for them, to be honest. There is something beautiful to me about these people who risked their lives wearing waxed canvas and leather clothes and beaked masks stuffed with aromatics in order to treat victims of the Black Plague. The fucking balls it must've taken, and the fact that they were doing their best to make PPE, is just beautiful to me. I love plague doctors, I know aesthetically they are creepy but to me they are a symbol of absolute love for one another!
On Plague Doctors
Plague Doctors are underrated. Because they basically figured out how one should treat disease. They just didn't have the technologically advancements or scientific knowledge to put into practice. They wore masks with garlic and herbs used to filter out bad smells. That's conceptually a gas mask. They wore gloves in order to not touch the sinful pestilence. They tried not to contact microorganisms, even if they didn't have the words for it. They did the same with the rest of their body as if they were wearing biohazard containment suits. They tried to get rid of bad blood, because they knew that there was something internally wrong with their patients that they needed to get out of the body. They just didn't know about microorganisms, so what else could they have thought was inside the body which was causing the problem. They were not stupid people. They just lived in the fourteenth century. They would be as talented as any modern doctor if they lived in the present day.
