PORTRAYAL DIVERGENCE NOTES.
ren is a dragon faunus. his trait was a pair of ivory horns that were filed down prior to the beginning of the series. as they’re made of keratin and not bone, they’ll grow back, and are only visible after the volume four time skip. he can also make smoke and breathe fire, but it’s rare.
ren’s family name is still lie. his given name is still ren. his parents were never married, and during her time in kuroyuri, ren’s mother ( zhilan lie ) went by the alias “an ren”. li ren is still the name of his father, and ren was named for the warrior clan of which li was the last surviving member.
ren is an orphan (or is under the assumption anyway), but he has three remaining family members left, two of which have been living off the grid for a majority of their lives. due to their unique circumstances, they’re unfit to act as ren’s caretakers. the remaining individual is ren’s grandmother, who he cherishes dearly.
ren’s family in kuroyuri was one small branch of a very very large collective of lie members, of which there was over fifty people, and over twenty heirs to the lie fortune. ren was the thirteenth in line for inheritance and now stands as the only heir alive.
due to being the victims of faunus poaching for their rare dragon traits, the lie family has always sided with the white fang.
ren was not meant to become a huntsman. as someone who showed little prowess in battle prior to the traumatising event which led to the removal of his horns, it was decided that he would instead be groomed and educated into the perfect suitor. prior to the loss of his family, ren was forced into an arranged marriage and was engaged.
the extended lie family operated under these rules: ‘if you are not strong enough to become a huntsman, you are married off into a different family.’
until it’s officially refuted, ren’s semblance is ‘emotional manipulation’ or empathy. while useful it has some devastating side effects and ren has developed many complexes surrounding it, which he prefers not to speak about.
