Some time ago I was commissioned by JaberwockyTheFox (Telegram) to make some sprites of the main character of a game they are making, and this is how the game looks so far! It is pretty cool to see ones art in action. Makes me want to work for more videogames! Credits for the rest of the assets: Tilesets by Chipmunk and The Chayed from OpenGameArt The sound by dklon also from OpenGameArt #pixel #pixelart #pixelartwork #pixelartist #pixelartgame #pixelsprites #furrypixelart #furrycommission #furrygame #videogame #videogameart #furryfox #foxfurry https://www.instagram.com/p/CXZlRJLOirP/?utm_medium=tumblr
Improving Tilesets, Creating Halls
Step 2! With basic movement and lights set up I went ahead and created a more suitable environment to test other things in. These hallways were designed in no particular order yet, because I haven’t entirely laid the plan out for that as of now.
I coded in a set of drawers that you can open to loot for an object. This comes with its own little animation already too! I also started creating some wall decorations and improving my tileset for walls and floors.
I’ve also drawn up a bunch of items I knew would be in the game, such as lamp oil to refill your lamp, and matches to maybe create more light sources on the way.
Hellooo, followers who remain, and anyone new that might come across this revived blog. I have been working tirelessly at a game project that has been on my wish-list for a long time, and now that I’m making a big of progress I wanted to document it for my future self.
Until I’ve got a lot more, I’m not going to give away too much about the premise, but I hope the screenshots look a little intriguing!
Full transparency, I’m going to stagger my posts a bit although I’m already much further than this. That way I’ll be able to see the stages I went through, until it’s all up to date again.
------------------------------------ THE BASICS -----------------------------------------
The very basic premise is a puzzle adventure game in which a thief is going to have to find his way out of a very haunted mansion.
I’m creating this game in Game Maker Studio 2, using a mixture of PiskelApp, Photoshop and Asesprite for the art.
FIRST STEPS: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first steps were to drag a lot of existing code over from my previous project into this one. This meant I was already mostly set up for:
- Player movement
- A simple dialogue system
- Depth sorting
- an Inventory that was intended for an RPG more than an adventure game
- a basic item notification system
- a camera that follows the player
-collision detection
- a running mode for the player, as well as a slow mode
In my first session of this project I created a basic test room with some old assets and got the player linked up to basic movement. Then I created a layer that draws the surface black, and used feathered png glows to cut a hole into that surface where the light should be.
The player can toggle between a circular light and a cone light to either illuminate his immediate surroundings or check further ahead of him.
This works quite nicely to keep everything else dark, but I’ve not yet found a good way to adjust the light colour and make it more scenic!

Made my kitties, I’m thinking of using them in a simple platformer game just to practice. #pixelartist #pixelartgame #pixelart #pixelcats #pixelcat # https://www.instagram.com/p/CGH9-mDA416/?igshid=g317i64f12td
