Amy Jacques Garvey (1895–1973) was a prominent activist, journalist, and the second wife of Marcus Garvey, the leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Born in Kingston, Jamaica, she became a key figure in the Pan-African movement and contributed significantly to its development, particularly in the 1920s and beyond.

Amy Jacques grew up in a well-educated family in Jamaica. She was exposed to activism and intellectual thought early in life, which prepared her for her later role as a political and social activist.

After marrying Marcus Garvey in 1922, she became one of his closest advisors and supporters. Amy was more than a spouse; she actively contributed to the UNIA by editing and writing for its publication, The Negro World. She managed much of Garvey’s work during his imprisonment in the United States, ensuring that his ideas continued to circulate. She also edited several of his speeches and writings into volumes like The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey.

Amy Jacques Garvey advocated for women’s involvement in the Pan-African movement and broader societal issues. She was a vocal proponent of racial pride, self-reliance, and African liberation. After Marcus Garvey’s death in 1940, she continued his work, writing and speaking widely about Pan-Africanism and the importance of unity among people of African descent.

In addition to her work with Marcus Garvey’s writings, Amy Jacques Garvey authored Garvey and Garveyism in 1963, chronicling the life and work of her husband and her perspective on the movement.
