there were plenty of times six had thought about different places and people she'd encountered in her life. they would pop into her thoughts and be shaken away, fleeting and distracting from her work. ย ( she had a region to run, and that was that. ) ย she'd become something of a workaholic as all these years went by, eating, breathing, and sleeping in the sea of rareitan troubles and infrastructure that sat before her every day. though, something nice was that in the last few years, things had settled. rareita had begun running mostly on it's own โ something it could already do โ more efficiently and with more systems in place to make the lives of it's citizens better. that was what she was doing. at the forefront of every project. signing off on documents and permits for buildings and everything needed for the region of forgotten memory to feel like it was real and alive.
surrounded by neon in this office of glass, eyes full of wonder -- yet tired from the work that had already been done โ descended upon the city of dreams below. people wandered the streets, smiles on their faces. a group of happy teens with their pokemon, running about. a police officer keeping watch but smiling all the same. a couple out on a date night, one dragging the other in while looking delighted. and down the street, right across from the tower of memories, there sat a pair of people. together, they got ice cream and sat close, perhaps exchanging stories and laughing. who were they ? a couple ? a pair of friends ? a brother and a sister ? a pang of emotion -- unclear and unwavering โ runs straight through her heart. she can't tear her eyes off the two. ย ( what about this scene made her feel this way ? what way was she even feeling ? ) ย suddenly, the smaller woman moves, taking off her jacket and laying it over the young male's shoulders as he shivers in the cold breath of the night.ย
it hits her like a runaway dash taxi. her phone slips through her fingers and hits the floor with an audible thud, but the sound refuses to reach her ears. her body is moving, but she's not controlling it as she stumbles back a bit, a look of deep regret on her face. what year was it ? why was that the question plaguing her ? she struggles to force her gaze away from the scene and look at the fire-type desk calendar beside her hand, which had just slammed into the desk and knocked it askew. ย ( a kind gift from ingo, a rare treat. ) ย the year listed on the calendar bores itself into her retinas, as if she hadn't looked at it at all before. it was all hitting her so fast, things were moving so fast. where did the time go ?! how had this long passed without her realizing ? how had she let this happen ? the world was spinning, she was spinning. up was down. down was up. and down she fell, landing with her back against the desk. her heart was in her throat. her breath was heavy. everything hurt. where was she.ย
perhaps it was a long time she scrambled like this, crying, crashing around in her office. papers and pokeballs end up scattered everywhere, pens and pencils and various office supplies create unknown shapes on the floor. her feet can't stop moving, carrying her, causing her to run out to the battlefield section of the champion's seat standing there. staring at her chair. her throne. she felt a pang of disgust looking at it, but the other prominent, overwhelming emotions overtook her. loud, raw sobs ripped through her body like a seviper fighting with a zangoose. the glass of her chamber made the sound echo around her, and surely, the whole towerโฆ no. the whole city must've heard her cries.ย
the door that leads into the champion's seat slides open, and it seems those that come out of it can't enter fast enough. normally, she was never disturbed up here, the champion. but out poured the elite four of the region, moving with such haste and concern as the young woman's legs simply gave out beneath her and she collapsed to her knees, feeling multiple pairs of arms wrapped around her, suspending her slightly in the air before falling beside her to hold her. are you okay what's going on six speak to us what are you doing is there something wrong. everything reaches her and nothing at the same time. she can't explain it. she felt wrong. she felt like a horrible person. she felt as though she had betrayed a lifetime of trust. she felt she felt she felt.
she felt like a failure all over again.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโญห.โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
pack your bags, they'd told her. it was time to go on a vacation. a real one, they'd said. she couldn't show her face. she didn't want to show her face to them, the others. the elite four who took her in and treated her like family. who lifted her up when she was down. who helped her shoulder the region on her shoulders. who cared for her deeply. she couldn't let them see her, because she couldn't apologize enough. torn in two directions, should she stay or go. she should stay. she had a region to run. she should go, she was a betrayer. she needed to fix this. she should stay, they'd never want to see her again anyway. ย ( shut up six, just go ! ) ย it hurt to leave her region, but everyone was pushing. the elite four members. her pokemon. hell, even five had messaged her to remind her to make time for herself. arceusโฆ what had she gotten herself into ?
and so she did. she left the region and let blazer take her where she knew she wanted to go. she could've taken a plane there. she could've taken a ferry. but it wouldn't be right. it wouldn't be the right way to do this. the sky and the sun swirled around her, warmth on her back, hearing blazer's wings beat against the wind, carrying her to the place she needed to be. galar. gotta go back to galar. gotta make it right. surely, she would find what she was looking for. surely what she wanted was waiting there for her. surely, it would all be okay.ย
she thought back to all those years ago. all that time ago when she had begun to feel whole once more. to the person who got her to where she was. to the person she loved like no other. memories of long nights without sleep, talking and keeping each other company. memories of a day of horror and pain, where he'd come to her rescue after she'd finished off a beast unlike anything the world had seen. memories of saving him. of fighting through a fae infested forest to protect him. memories of helping him through hard times. of being helped through hard times. memories of him. his face plagued her thoughts. she had to see him again. had to make this right. she wouldn't stop until she'd fixed it. or she'd die trying.
blazer took her far. far away, to the region of galar. to the place where it all began, with the moon shining bright before them as they descended below the clouds over the wild area of the region. over the place where it would begin again. she knew she would find him here. would find him out and about, and she wouldn't stop searching until she did. her mind is focused, her gaze hard at the ground. find the fire. find the tent. find him. hours seemed to pass. it seemed to take too long. ย ย ย โ one more sweep, blazer. just one more. โ ย ย ย her ace let out a grumble, knowing he wouldn't stop either until that fluffy kid appeared again.ย
in the distance. something flickers. something stirs.ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย and she knows it's who she's looking for.
