Eugene always knew that this day would come, but he never really imagined how awful it would feel when it finally arrived. W felt like home, a place where he had found himself among brothers, and he couldn't imagine waking up next to anyone else. Hell, he couldn't even imagine going to Europe with anyone else but the men he had trained beside since originally being one of the lucky few chosen to be a medic in this war. And even though he knew how stupid the idea was, he couldn't help but wish they'd send an entire unit of medics over just so they wouldn't have to be split up.
This morning was different than all other mornings on account of the men of W knowing that this was their last day together. And the couldn't help but want to go out in a way that would make the company proud, especially considering that come noon today, the entire thing would basically be dissolved.
Eugene wasn't sure who suggested running Currahee, but everyone was quick to jump on board with the idea, dressing out in their PT gear that had the taped crosses on the back. The run was quick, motivated, and as they reached the top, the men shouted out in unison before making their way back down the mountain.
But now, the barracks were silent as each man slowly went about packing his things, refusing to make eye contact with the man in the cot beside him. And slowly but surely, each one finished and said their goodbyes before heading off to their new assignments.
Spina met Eugene outside and the two of them headed off to second platoon together, not really knowing what to expect. They met with a man with dark features who seemed far too preoccupied with tucking his tie into his shirt to bother with the two of them. He spoke slowly and with too much diction, and Eugene couldn't help but give Spina a side eye as he spoke to the two of them. A mistake of which was quickly brought to his attention by the man in front of him, and hey were soon assigned to two different barracks, on account of the bad behavior.
Eugene stood in front of his new home for a minute before finally walking up the three wooden steps and pushing open the door. He was met with the stare of what seemed like a million faces, though in reality it was only about ten guys in total. And Eugene couldn't help but purse his lips as he looked around, before spotting an empty bunk on the right side of the room.
Making his way over quickly, he set his bag down on the end of the bed before turning back to look at the eyes that were still fixated on him. So many people transferred out of the paratroopers, and he figured they were all probably wondering who was the new guy that was now being transferred in.
