Saint John of Kanty (John Cantius)
1390 - 1473
Feast Day: December 23
Patronage: teachers, students, priests, pilgrims, Poland and Lithuania
Saint John of Kanty, also known as John Cantius was born in Kety, Poland. He was a brilliant student, ordained a priest, and became a professor of theology and philosophy by the time he was 23. He was well known for his generosity to the poor and students, caring for their financial and spiritual needs. As a staunch defender of the faith, he wrote many theological tracks and hand-copied the scriptures. He took pilgrimages to Rome and Jerusalem. Yet because of his popularity, his jealous rivals kicked him out of the university and sent him to a small Bohemian parish. He won the parishioners’ hearts and after 8 years he returned to Krakow to teach and died a natural death.

The Miracle of the Sacred Fire, Church of the Holy Sepulchre
Artist: William Holman Hunt (English, 1827-1910)
Date: 1892-1899
Medium: Oil and resin on canvas
Collection: Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States
Description
Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and a painter of religious subjects, made four trips to the Holy Land. This painting represents the annual “miracle of the sacred fire” at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Denounced as a fraud for centuries, the event continued to attract thousands of pilgrims, who eagerly awaited the rekindling of the flame over Christ’s purported tomb. Hunt found the scene, with its crush of bodies, to be distasteful and heretical, but was keen to capture its “dramatic, historic, and picturesque” qualities.
