It's been a few days since I finished reading Pihanjin. Inspite all my whining about how they didn't confess until the end, the book really left an impression on me. I am still thinking about the story even though I am reading something else right now. My mind is wondering back to how everything went down and making me rethink my initial impression of it.
I think I really liked the book.

Done. This is really well written. But my frustration with the leads grew and grew. Every time I thought now is the time they realize and confess, they didn't. By chapter 80 something when I was edged to 'it will happen now' and then it didn't, then I knew it was either a sad ending or dragged to the end.
I am a bit scared to start Peng Lai Ke's other books.
Who am I kidding đđ I will probably end up starting another book by this time tomorrow eheheheehehhee

Finished Pihajin. It was an excellently written novel that didnât truly click with me.
Honestly, by the end of it I was just tired of how lugubrious FL was. It made sense but it was tiring to read about and honestly if near the end you find yourself thinking âpoor dude I hope you move on and get to be happy instead of pining for this dreary dreary womanâ about her sort of ex husband, wellâŚ(donât get me started on the son, by the end he irritated me every time he was mentioned. Not to mention his original reason for suicide made zero sense. Offing yourself because your father didnât rescue your mother on time and you saw her kill herself isâŚa choice.)
The big problem is that I donât like the way most âtransmigrated into younger selfâ stories handle the âdebts from past go around lifeâ - like it hasnât happened yet for godâs sake! And this falls into the same trap. Outside of 2ha (which breaks the mold entirely), or novels where the reborn person mainly interacts with characters she didnât in past life (for example the authorâs own Wishing and Marquis) which is not really the same thing, the sole novel that handled the trope the way I like (yes she interacts mainly with people from past life, no she does not want to punish or hate them for go around that hasnât happened!!!) is Reborn as Tyrantâs Pet. It is usually less noticeable because in those types of novels FL or whoever avenges herself on villains and also they never seem to change but here ML is quite different from first life (and honestly even in first life he did not get her offed on purpose, he was gonna trade for her and then a rescue went awry. Itâs not husband of the year material but heâs hardly a monster abuser) so I just find myself going ummmm surely you need to chill, demon spawn (thatâs the kid.)
Anyway by the end ML is as dreary as the rest of them so I guess they deserve each other.
Itâs an excellently written novel but alas not really my thing.
ETA: also why on earth did ML fall for FL in this life? She didnât say a kind word to him for the whole time except like in the last two chapters. I get why she is this way but what on earth about her attitude or behavior would make him fall for her? Is he a masochist? (Yeah blah blah past life connection but thatâs a shortcut I am not fond of.)

I am about 40% into Pihanjin and what an utterly solid novel! I donât ship the main couple whatsoever but they are both such deeply complex, interesting ADULT characters who also feel like deeply period people.
So far, I like Wishing and Marquis better in terms of emotional reaction on my part but I think Pihanjin might be the most solid of this writerâs stuff (among what I read).
Pihanjin is great! Heroine is boss and hero isâŚwell in The Marquis Is Innocent in the past life Wei Shao did not owe her anything nor did she even meet him and she died due to her husband. Here the heroine is going from the premise that in past go-around when she was married to ML he let her die despite her being a loving ideal wife but also, and that is the thing she cannot get over, their son committed suicide at 14 because of him.
So in this life all she wants is a divorce and to never see the MFer again.
This is great because in most reborn as younger self novels he wouldnât be the ML, heâs be someone she gets revenge on and hooks up with someone else (see Rebirth of Malicious Empress or even Peng Lai Keâs own Wishing You Eternal Happiness.) I am so curious to see how she will make me ship them - I mean I went from disliking Wei Shao in Marquis or No Longer Trash Man in Dreamer and not seeing how I could ship that to loving them and shipping them with the heroine and itâs the most fun feeling!
Finished The Marquis Is Innocent, which was excellent. Starting Pihanjin now.
