He completely froze, watching her groan out in pain from his lack of reflexes to catch her.

“Matt?” she sniffled, concern switching towards him as opposed to her knee.

Breath escaped him, limbs working reluctantly and stiffly as he bent to sit by her side. He dabbed the blood with his sleeve, stopping to apply pressure against her broken skin.

“You okay?” her soft voice contrasted against the quiet.

Matt looked up to see a few of her tears slowly drying, forgotten to her as her worry for him persisted.

“I shouldve caught you.” he mumbled out, looking back to check on the bleeding - halted for now.

“Its okay.” she smiled, wiping her face. “You just froze, it happens.”

He kept his head faced down, practically pouting and sad for himself. Pink took the initiative to move closer, ignoring matts calls for her to stay still in case the wound re-opens. She rested her head on his shoulder, feeling matt finally relax and use the tree stump behind him for support.

“Matthew, what were you thinking?!”

“I wanted to help-”

“Thats not an excuse!”

“You're not mad?” she spoke up.

“Why would i be mad?”

“I fell out a tree.”

“You were tryna help that cat. You did help.”

She shuffled closer, shame working through her bones as it usually did.

“You have a big heart, pink. And for a girl whos always terrified, you were really brave.”

“Even though i got hurt?”

“Especially because you got hurt.”

He cried into his hands. Hours passed. Alone in his room.

Matt wished that eventually someone would come in and tell him how glad they were that he was okay - glad that hes alive.

Sniffling was the sound that echoed - a punishing soundtrack for his loneliness.

“Whats going on in your head?” she tried to lighten the tension by giggling. Matt breathed a sigh of slight relief - her aim clearly having worked.

“Too much. Wish it was just you in here.”

She tilted her head to press a kiss on his jawline, grinning widely but still worried. Her pain had clearly taken a toll on him, heavier than usual.

“You can talk to me."

“I know. We should probably get going - we’re literally sat on the floor-”

“Theres no rush. I-i mean that for both things. I know you find talking hard and thats- thats okay. I wanna help. Theres no rush to leave here either.”

He stretched his arms as far as he could past the river bank’s rocks. It was straining, had him wishing he had super powers to elasticate his skin. Please work. Please work. He pleaded to himself and anyone that could hear his thoughts.

“Matt! Be careful!”

“I can do it!”

He hoped so anyways. No one needed to hear about his lack of confidence.

The cat struggled to stay above water, calling out. matt convinced himself it was aimed directly at him, causing the pressure to succeed to increase.

The flow of water seemed to angle slightly from the wind; making it severely clear he was going to miss. He couldnt risk that.

Matt shifted strategies, small boots dipping into the water - filling past the tall brim and flooding his shoes which he forced himself to ignore.

His brothers persisted calling out, voices strained from increasing volume as they felt matt couldnt hear them - the only logical reason for him to be continuing they thought.

The animal continued crying, matt steadied his feet in the water, fighting against its flow.

When it finally reached arms distance, he cautiously cradled it, jolting back from its frightened impulsive movements to fight against him. He wobbled to the edge of the water, guiding its limbs to stand itself on the grass. With a loss of focus on his own, he slipped, head falling under the cold water, his toddler frame completely covered, pushing his body down the river.

Now he was the drowning cat.

He choked and struggled, faintly listening to his brothers screech out in the most fear they'd ever experienced.

Matt felt the water get deeper, rocks under the surface, further down and impossible to reach. He spat out water, feeling more lightheaded with his repeated trips fully under water without an ability to pull himself up.

A harsh grip pulled his shoulder harshly as if he was weightless. He was dropped onto the grass harshly, parents and brothers stood over him.

They looked angry. Not the emotion he’d expected. Weren't they glad he was okay?

“Matthew, what were you thinking!” his mother cried out, disappointed.

“I wanted to help-”

“Thats not an excuse!”

He formed a deep frown, feeling his throat close and tears brimming his eyelids.

He forced his shaky limbs to stand him up, feeling his tears flow as he ran from everyone.

Maybe he was pathetic, he thought. Stupid. A baby.

His heart for the cat he now resented had closed up. Matts throat burned from both drowning and now crying. Sobbing louder and louder - begging for his family's sympathy without wanting to ask for it.

He cried into his hands. Hours passed. Alone in his room.

Matt wished that eventually someone would come in and tell him how glad they were that he was okay - glad that he's alive.

Maybe not everyone desevred pity. Apparently the animal didnt, he was shunned by his family for trying to help.

He really had traded places with it - clearly matt wasnt deserving of pity either. Not when he cried, not when hed been drowning. Not when he felt like he was dying because it hurt so much.

“It wasnt your fault.” pink’s eyes sparkled from tears, staring up at him.

“Guess so. Wasnt exactly mum’s either. She was just worried, came out the wrong way.”

“Doesnt make it just stop hurting.”

Matt shuffled closer into pink this time, hoping he could blink away the cause of the sting in his eyes before she noticed.
