1. What is your favourite quote from a philosophical text?
I already answered this one in a previous post, but it has actually changed since then. This is a quote from Simone Weil's La personne et le sacré (keep in mind, this is my own (possibly faulty) translation of a Dutch quote translated in turn from French:
From the first light of life to the grave, there is, deep in the heart of every human being, something invincible, which despite the experience of committed, undergone and witnessed crimes expects that man will do good and not evil. This is it that is above all holy in a person.
9. What philosopher is underrated? Tell me about them!
ANNE CONWAY!! She was a huge inspiration for Leibniz and her only published work is available online. Please check it out of you like Leibniz or modern philosophy in general.
10. What philosopher is overrated?
I'm gonna be so fr right now I think Descartes is overrated. Like okay I think therefore I am, proof of God, body/soul dualism, etc. All that was done centuries earlier by Avicenna. And I know Descartes is still important to acknowledge because it is in the form that he wrote that this kind of thought influenced many modern philosophers, but his thoughts aren't all that original.
11. What philosopher, no matter how relevant, are you sick of hearing about?
Hobbes. Get him out of here. I know everyone and their mother either replies to him or critiques him but I'M SO SICK OF HIM
14. Is there a philosopher or philosophical stance you have beef with? Which is it and why?
I have also answered this one previously, but I have a new addition, namely the stance that democracy and state secrecy are compatible. I don't necessarily think this is incorrect, I just think there is a difference between what is logically consistent and what is right. Sure, democracy and state secrecy are compatible, but there are cases in which it's not right regardless of compatibility.
