In 1689, a Habsburg general by the name of Enea Silvio Piccolomini burned the city of Skopje, Macedonia, to the ground. Â The city was plagued by cholera epidemics; Piccolomini, who had great faith in the cleansing power of fire, decided to see if it would work on cholera.
Probably not, since he died of cholera shortly after the incident. Â That was likely cold comfort to all the people who had been displaced by his early attempt at disease eradication, though.
