Prompt idea for The Magicians, end of season three, the monster (eliot) finds a way to friend Quentin (Brian) he becomes his roommate or neighbor and convinces him to read Fillory and Further, and learn card tricks (it will help with his lectures) and they become friends. He didn’t tell him magic was real but seduced him and lifts his spirits and life retains its sparkle for decades. :)
The book showed up one day outside Brian’s door, wrapped in garish wrapping paper. Brian had a feeling that it was the work of his neighbor, Griffin. A bit odd, but seemed genuine, Griffin lived a few doors down from Brian and seemed to always be around when Brian was coming or going.
He grabbed the package and stepped into this apartment, turning on a couple of lights before heading to the kitchen and warming up some leftovers for dinner before sitting at the table and carefully opening the package.
“Fillory and Further Book 1: The World in the Walls,” Brian read the title of the book out loud. It seemed a little childish, definitely not something a college professor would be reading. He set the book aside and went to his dinner - he still had papers to grade before he could even think about getting sleep.
Other books followed the first and soon Brian had the whole collection thanks to Griffin.
Brian jumped as his neighbor suddenly appeared next to him to wait for the elevator.
“Oh, hello Griffin,” Brian said.
“Have you read them?” Griffin asked again.
“I’ve skimmed them a bit,” Brian said with a kind smile.
“They’re really quite good, you should read them,” Griffin said.
“I’ll … I’ll certainly try, thanks,” Brian replied.
“Where are you going?” Griffin asked.
“Oh, just to pick up some groceries,” Brian said just as the elevator doors opened.
“Oh, well have fun,” Griffin said. “And read the books.”
Brian stepped into the elevator and shook his head as Griffin went back to his apartment. Brian ran to the market to get his groceries and when he came back home, he found another garishly wrapped package.
It was a book on how to do basic card tricks.
“Kids books and card tricks,” Brian said, shaking his head.
He’d read the first Fillory and Further book and had to admit it was interesting. It almost felt … familiar.
Maybe he’d read the others.
[I picked Griffin for the ‘name’ of the monster as it is a mythical beast]
