Because I’m never free of these little language demons called phrasal verbs...
Spoken for. I’ve just listened someone say “I’m spoken for”. And I was... expecting something more, because spoken comes from speak. So... this person was told something in order to do something, I assumed. That’s how I was understanding the “for”. Being told something “for” doing something else.
In another situation... “I’m spoken for”... meant in my head that maybe the person lacked of personal opinion/voice on the matter, so someone else spoke on behalf this person.... sure. Makes sense. “For” makes sense there too.
No. Nope. I had to google it because the situation grew in confusion the more I listened.... Who in the fucking english hell decided that spoken for is taken? Taken as in “I’m romantically involved with someone else”. It makes no fucking sense. I’m angry at English. Like... really?. Spoken for!? No way to fucking guess that meaning!
And to make things worse... you can say a seat is spoken for.... like.... fuck this shit.
