Hello. Can you please please write down how to properly say Richard's name in German? I hear Ri-xard and Rish-xard. Help! And no, hearing him saying it does not help! 😭
Hi 👋🏻
Who would have thought that the linguistic-phonetic part of my studies would one day pay off for fandom work? The /ch/ sound is quite difficult for English-speaking people since there is little to no comparable sound in English. In linguistics, the /ch/ sound is classified as a fricative, specifically a voiceless palatal fricative. The tongue approaches the hard palate (palatum), causing the air to escape with friction - over the tongue, not past it.
Here is a graphic showing how the sound is produced in the mouth:
and the tongue's position for the /ch/ sound:
The German /ch/ could perhaps be compared to the initial sound of "huge" or "Hugh."
This tutorial, from which the graphic is taken, is a bit longer but explains the articulation of the /ch/ sound very well.
If it doesn't help listening to Richard himself saying it, maybe Olli can help you a bit? He really has a nice and clear pronunciation here 😄
Plus, we have an absolute expert when it comes to German pronunciation in our midst, so maybe the lovely @m---e---l has something to add 🤲🏻

Hi Linguists of Tumblr! For my bachelor thesis I created a website that is visualizing the IPA so you can learn it easier :D I wanted to share this resource with you it's still a work-in progress but you can already click through the letters and animations + also get more info on the IPA (you can basically click on every expression and it will be explained to you)

Some footage of me performing my verse and beginning of the chorus for the track “low life” a litte while back that i produced on my mpc 5000 with my homie Drone at Lozers Lounge in pompano, i was also DJ’ing the show off my sp404 in the back on my table. Hands down some of the best times i have ever had performing anywhere, working on getting another show here in December with my homies.

Okay in my understanding it's just ch sound but it's so soft you can hear or even sometimes unintentionally say shch, yes? Rishchard. It's like when similar sounding letters blend together.
Hello again 👋
Hm, not really. In German, you really just say /ch/ when you pronounce his name, the /sch/ (/sh/ in English) actually has no part in it. It's also produced in a different part of the mouth than the /ch/ sound, using the front teeth. Some people in Eastern Germany sometimes tend to pronounce Richard with a soft /sch/ sound, but other than that it's really just /ch/.
