Stop Googling written by Sherry Turkle of the New York Times writes a compelling piece about how technology, specifically how cell phone usage, has an impact on verbal communication between people. She also ties in various psychological studies done on the impact technology has on person to person relations. I believe that the most telling aspect of the article is the social experiment that was done where they asked the students if they would rather get shocked with mild electric shocks or sit alone with their thought for at least 15 minutes, and more students opted for the electric treatment then to sit with their thoughts. I personally see it more with the younger generations who are growing up in a world where apps and the social media world was all they ever knew. I am a 90s kid, therefor I still remember a world where no one had cell hones as kids and we would all play outside together but we grew up when this form of technology, this new form of “living”, was being introduced. My family has the no devices at dinner rule and I have an easier time with it then my 14 year old sister does. Actually, any excuse I can get that says “no phones” is kinda of a relief. I feel pressure to be constantly connected. I have a fear that I am missing out on something if I am not constantly checking and keeping up with everything, it is exhausting. I do not think that phones or being connected is bad but I think it has had a negative impact on personal relationships.
