Phoe-Phoe sounds like such a childish name for a majestic phoenix, but then again she is basically immortal and thus probably much older than Lujanne. So perhaps Lujanne was a child when she named her (and perhaps back then Phoe-Phoe was – for the hundredth time – a cute fledgling as well).
(also Lujanne is of course a total goof and might have named her Phoe-Phoe even as an adult)
Finally reading Through the Moon for myself (tho I know most of what happens already lol) BUT I noticed this exchange w/ Lu-Janne and Ezran and had some thoughts:
1. This is so sweet and sad. It’s hard to miss ppl when they’re gone. The hurt isn’t lessened very much, even knowing you’ll probably see them again soon. I really like how they included how Lu-Janne felt about losing Phoe-Phoe. I think it’s a really nice moment.
2. My brain decided to bring Rayllum into this (because of course it does. Stupid hopeless romantic brain.) and idk if someone else has already said this (probably) BUT this does make me think of Rayla’s cycle of sacrificing herself, only to come back and sooner or later, starting the cycle again. With that, Rayla is kinda like a phoenix. She’s evaded death who knows how many times in the past two years, not to mention the whole cliff jump thing. And I can’t help but think Callum would say something very similar to what Lu-Janne says here. “I know she’ll be back, but this part of the cycle still hurts.”
It’s hard to love someone who values the mission (whatever that may be) over themselves. It’s hard to love someone who’s always gonna end up leaving.
So yeah, I love this moment, and Rayla is like a Phoenix. But she’s also not. So maybe she can break her cycle and finally let herself choose what she really wants, rather than what she feels like she needs to do.
Remember the scene when Ezran reunited with Callum and Rayla in Book Three?
Why, in your opinion, Rayla didn't cry in 3x06 when Phoe Phoe died?
Ezran has always had a deeper connection with animals and Phoe-Phoe had been the one helping him. He'd had days alone with her and could also communicate with her directly. Ezran had also gotten Phoe-Phoe's help in teaching Zym how to fly. Alternatively, Rayla hasn't seen (or thought) about Phoe-Phoe in days if not weeks by then. The only significant time she'd spent with Phoe-Phoe was when they were flying through the night as a trio on the bird's saddle in between 2x03 and 2x04. They just weren't as close, and Rayla isn't as emotionally-empathetic as Ezran is to begin with, either.

rayla is obviously going off on her own to protect callum. of course basically the dragang as a whole, but mostly callum. she can’t lose someone she loves, not again.
callum is going to wake up, assuming rayla will be there, and be confused when she isn’t.
